HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Founded in 1994 as an institution of higher learning and duly recognized by the


Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Technical Education and Skills Development
Authority (TESDA), Philippine College of Science and Technology stands on a 4,624 sq.m.
located in Barangay Nalsian, Calasiao, Pangasinan.

It offers a variety of courses from Engineering to Technical courses that cater to the
demands of higher education. Committed in upgrading the educational standards and enhancing
the level of education for the students are the primary objectives of PhilCST. With these
objectives, the school is continuously upgrading the standard in order to provide the students the
highest quality of education.

In 1997, the school was acclaimed as one of the fastest growing institution in the region
due to its manifold increase in population annually.

It was in 1999, when the school became ISO 9001 Certified Institution. The Anglo-
Japanese- American (AJA) Registrar awarded the certification, one of the factors and
manifestations that PhilCST can compete at par with the region’s best. To date, the school is high
in attaining educational excellence.

In quest of excellence, instruction was strengthened by various/updated facilities and


approaches. The College of Secondary Education exposed the student teachers in Experiential
Learning Activity, (Field Study and On the Job Training or OJT/In-Campus and Off Campus
Observation and Practice Teaching.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) exists between PhilCST, the Elementary Central


School and the Public Secondary school in the municipality for the Experiential Learning of
fourth year Bachelor of Secondary Education students.

In January 2003, PACUCOA made its consultation visit to the school and College of
Education was included. In 2008, Bachelor of Secondary Education was accredited by
PACUCOA under Level I Formal Accredited Status. The College is under the leadership of a
College Dean, re-enforced by equally qualified and competent faculty members who are Retired
Department Heads, Master Teachers, and Principal. The line-up of faculty is committed to tackle
the challenge of accreditation.

With the concerted efforts of the administration, faculty, students and strong support of
the parents, the College of Education can achieve its goal to become a producer of professionally
qualified graduates imbued with dignity and high moral values who are mature, productive, self-
reliant, responsible and self-disciplined citizens.

FOREWORD

This Bulletin of Information is designed to assist, guide the supervising academic instructors
and cooperating / critic teachers in the laboratory school of teacher training institutions,
especially in developing, guiding, and molding student teachers entrusted to them.

This will acquaint them with the knowledge, roles and responsibilities as mentors/
facilitators of future teachers. It will also make them more enthusiastic, efficient, effective and
competent in preparing better future teachers intellectually, physically, socially and spiritually
ready for the school of the future.

The Philippine College of Science and Technology is committed to the pursuit of
excellence relative to the students’ professional growth and development.

VISION

PhilCST envisions to produce graduates fully equipped with knowledge, attitudes, values
and skills who are globally competitive in their chosen profession ever ready to render quality
services.

MISSION STATEMENT

PhilCST provides quality education to every student through a well-balanced research-


oriented learning environment that develops critical and Creative thinking for maximum
development of individuals’ talent and capacities.

INSTITUTIONAL OBJECTIVES

In pursuit of its Vision and Mission, PhilCST will achieve the following:

1. provide programs and activities that will enhance the development of the students’
physical, cultural, emotional, social, spiritual and moral growth;

2. provide college education opportunities to poor but deserving students through the
PhilCST scholarship program;

3. train students with globally competitive technical skills that will make them
competent and capable of handling challenges of life; and

4. provide the manpower needs of the country with professionally qualified graduates
imbued with dignity and high moral values who are mature, productive, self- reliant,
responsible and self-disciplined citizens.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

To provide the country with globally competitive and professionally licensed graduates
as integral part of the total manpower needed for economic development in the national and
international levels.
In consonance with the philosophy, vision, and mission of Philippine College of Science
and Technology, the Education Department is highly committed to achieve the following
objectives:

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To produce globally competitive education graduates who are professionally and


adequately equipped teachers of the new millennium in the effective development of the youth as
responsible citizen.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The above goal will be achieved through the following specific objectives:

1. to equip the students with working knowledge and scientific skills in the management of
teaching – learning process in a research – oriented environment;

2. to provide a well – balanced training in lesson planning needed in the delivery of services
including the production and use of appropriate instructional materials for effective
instruction;

3. to equip the prospective teachers proficiency and competence in the specific evaluation of
the performance of learners as basis for redirection of teaching strategies and guidance;

4. to provide a balanced professional training of the future teachers through a well –


organized in – campus and off – campus teaching in coordination with the public schools;
and

5. to produce future teachers who are adequately equipped with the knowledge of arts,
science, technology, skills, culture, and values, which they will eventually transmit the
dignity and excellence for the transformation of the youth.
OVERVIEW

In 1995, PhilCST opened the College of Bachelor of Secondary Education with General
Science as its major field. On the second year, its enrolment increased to 18 and on the third
year, its enrolment doubled to 37. Faculty members were hired for the college to handle the
major and professional subjects.

A memorandum of agreement was signed with the Calasiao Comprehensive National


High School and with the Calasiao Central School to accommodate the 3 rd year education
students to have their class observation and participation(Field Study), and Participation (Off-
campus teaching), OJT or Practice Teaching, now Experiential Teaching – Learning.

PhilCST’s effort in conducting career counseling annually in both public and private high
schools bolstered the increase in enrolment.

In 2001, ten (10) students successfully graduated as the pioneer education batch. Four (4)
of them easily and successfully passed the licensure examination for teachers.

At present, the enrolment continues to increase. Most of the graduates are being hired
immediately after their graduation. Various school activities relevant to their preparation to be a
teacher are conducted such as Leadership Trainings, Seminar – Workshops, Community
Extension Service Programs and the like, thereby enriching and intensifying their basic skills and
knowledge.

One very significant accomplishment and pride as College is that, several of our
graduates are now part of the PHILCST Faculty Family!

CODE OF CONDUCT
1. Education and Mass Communication students shall at all times uphold the rules,
regulations and policies of the college, its organizations and the school.
1. Education and Mass Communication officers (AFT) Association of Future Teachers shall
perform their duties with dedication, thoroughness,, efficiency, enthusiasm, and
determination.
2. Education and Mass Communication students should comply with the rules and
regulations of the college and of the institution.
3. Education and Mass Communication students shall manifest loyalty to the college, its
personnel and the institution.
4. Unity among officers and members of the college organization shall at all times be
upheld.
5. Education and Mass Communication students shall devote their studies, research and
extension services.

CONDITIONS ON WEARING OF UNIFORM AND ID CARD

1. Type “A” uniform on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with black shoes and socks.
1. Type “B” uniform on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
2. Uniform should be worn while inside the school campus with or without classes.
3. School ID should be worn with the corresponding uniform.
4. Education and Mass Communication students should maintain a dignified appearance by
wearing complete uniform and sporting the prescribed haircut.
5. Inspection of haircut shall be every first and last week of the month to be conducted by
the college student council officers with the supervision of the Dean and the faculty
members of the college.

Any student who will not pay the corresponding fine shall have his/ her I.D.taken by the
office, and collections of fines will be the fund of the college and the organization, which shall
be spent for the organization’s activities and projects.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

ENG 100 Study and Thinking Skills in English (3 units)


Course Description:

This course is designed to develop the language learning strategies, effective


communicative techniques, study skills, critical thinking, and problem solving of students
necessary for academic studies. Lessons and activities will involve development of oral
communication skills in the different social contexts, and enhancement of library and
reading skills. Emphasis will be given to effective sentence and paragraph construction.

ENG 101 Writing in the Discipline (3units)

Course Description:

This course is designed to achieve the basic aim of a composition course namely to teach
students to write clearly and effective with full regard for the conventions of grammar,
usage, and style. The main target of the course is to lead the students by stages to construct
sentences, combine sentences into paragraphs, and paragraphs into composition
acquainting them with the techniques of writing, thus, developing and refining their own
skills.

ENG 102 Speech Communication (3 units)

Course Description:

This course is about voice and speech improvement that deals with tool king conversation
and how you sound when you are saying it. It further helps the student identify their
specific identity speech problems. It is an introductory cause designed to acquaint student
with speech sound symbols in English. It aims to develop their spoken English proficiency
and confidence in pressing themselves to become a successful professional someday.

ENGLISH / FILIPINO LITERATURE

LIT 100 World Literature (3 units)

Course Description:

This course aims to deepen the student’s understanding on literacy genres and to make
the students appreciate the breath and depth of literature in other countries. By the end of
the course, the students must have read the literary texts and be able to stage a play.

LIT 101 Literaturang Filipino (3 units)

Course Description:

Ang kursong ito ay nagbibigay pokus sa panitikan ng Pilipinas sa iba’t ibang panahon.
Saklaw sa pangkalahatan ng kursong ito ang mga salitang inakda ng mga manunulat sa
Pilipino mula panahon bago dumating ang mga Kastila hanggang kasalukuyan. Itinuturo sa
kursong ito ang mga piling akda at mga natatanging obra – maestro na nag – ambag sa
kalinangna ng kulturang Pilipino at kailangang sining sa larangan ng panitikan. Partikular
na bibigyang pansin ang mga matatandang panitikan gaya ng mga epiko at tula ng iba’t
ibang rehiyon sa bansa at mga akda na isinulat noong panahon ng kolonyalismo at
imperyalismo. MAtatalakay din ang mga buod ng mga nobela, maikling kwento, sanaysay,
at dula sa makathang modernong panahon ng panitikan.

FILIPINO LANGUAGE

FIL 100 Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan (3 units)

Course Description:

Sumasaklaw ang kurso sa maikling pagsulat kaugnay ang apat na paraan sa


pagpapahayag o pagkukwento, paglalarawan, paglalahad, at pangangatwiran. Ang
kursong ito ay nagbibigay diin sa pagsasabuhay ng mha kahalagahang pantao tulad ng
nasyonalismo, karapatang intelektwal, lidership, kaalaman at pananagutang panglipunan
at kalikasan.

FIL101 Pagbasa at Pagsulat sa Iba’t Ibang Disiplina (3 units)

Course Description:

Ang kursong ito ay magbibigay pokus sa pagbasa at pagsulat bilang kasangkapan sa


pagtatalo. Ituturo sa kursong ito ang mga estratehiya sa pagbasa ng iba’t ibang genre ng
mga textong nakasulat. Lilinangin din ang mga kasanayan sa pang – unawa gayundin sa
pagsulat ng iba’t ibang sulating akademiko.

FIL 102 Retorika (3 units)

Course Description:

Sumasaklaw ang kurso sa maikling pagsulat kaugnay ng apat na paraan sa pagpapahayag,


pagsasalaysay o pagkukwento, paglalarawan, paglalahad, at pangangatwiran. Sa kursong
ito ay nagbibigay diin sa pagsasabuhay ng mga kahalagahang pantao tulad ng
nasyonalismo, karapatang intelektwal, lidership, kaalaman at pananagutang panlipunan at
kalikasan.

NATURAL SCIENCE

NAT SCI 100 Introduction to Biological Science (3 units)

Course Description:

This course is the science of Life. It focuses on the living organisms and their
interrelationship to each other emphasizing the diverse creation and their occurrence.
NAT SCI 101 Earth Science (3 units)

Course Description:

This course deals with the basic concepts on the planet Earth as a whole. The meaning and
extraction of minerals and gems, the prediction of weather and earthquakes, the pollution
of the atmosphere and the forces that shape the physical world all fall within the scope of
study.

MATHEMATICS

MATH 100 College Algebra (3 units)

Course Description:

This subject teachers the student the theory on sets, real number, algebraic expression and
operation, equation and inequalities, function, relation and their graph, system of equation
and complex numbers. It also deals the operations with polynomials and rational
expressions, exponents, and radicals.

MATH 101 College Trigonometry (3 units)

Course Description:

This course that deals with the study of trigonometric functions and identities, logarithms
and solution of right triangles, polygons and other kinds of triangles.

HUMANITIES

HUM 100 Fundamentals of Arts (3 units)

Course Description:

A general course covering the nature, scope, methods, and principles of art man and
society as part of the umbrella of humanities. Basic art fundamentals of perception,
appreciation, and aesthetic experience towards art.

HUM101 Introduction to Philosophy (3 units)

Course Description:

This subject attempts to provide the ultimate whys and wherefores of all things, with man
as the key point, the starting, the central and the predominant theme of discussion. Hence,
learning and knowing man, his actions, his activities, his problems and all their
implications and relationships that cover the whole world revolve around man and his
problems.

SOCIAL SCIENCE

SOC SCI 100 General Psychology (3 units)

Course Description:

Psychology underlines the most important learning we are capable of finding out more
about ourselves and about the people whose lives we interest with ours. This course deals
on the study of human behavior and mental processes. Included here is the
comprehensive discussion of biological processes and environmental influences as
determinants of one’s behavior.

SOC SCI 101 Society and Culture with Pop Drugs and Environment Education (3 units)

Course Description:

This course on the study of the relationship of population, drug and environmental
sanitation in the cultural society of man. It aims further to identify the describe practices of
society in order to improve its way of life from thereon.

SOC SCI 102 Principles of Eco with Agrarian Reform Tax and Coop (3 units)

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to economics with the aim of getting the students acquainted
with the economic principles and facts. It deals with the study and analysis of economic
theories, laws, principles, trends, and practices and their application to national as well as
international development. It includes the study of various activities of man in creation,
exchange and use of goods to meet the demand of business and basic needs. This also
deals with the basic principles of agrarian reform with emphasis on problems and issues
affecting the nation’s economy and development. The nature and characteristics of
taxation is likewise included to create a better awareness of the benefits and obligations
derived from the payments of taxes.

SOC SCI 103 Politics and Governance with Phil. Constitution (3 units)

Course Description:

Politics and Governance with Philippine Constitution contributes to address the need for
integration and its importance to highlight the all too important function of the study of
politics, governance, Government, and the Philippine Constitution. The integration of
various related fields and discipline can lead to a better understanding of the requirements
for responsible citizenship, effective leadership, and good public service.

MANDATED SUBJECTS

MS1 World History (3 units)

Course Description:

This subject would trace the origin of man, where he settled and how he arrived until he
gradually improved himself to enjoy the advantages of modern civilization.

MS 2 Rizal (3 units)

Course Description:

This course deals with the historical background of Dr. Jose Rizal’s family. It includes his
life, works, and writings in the Philippines and abroad, analysis and further study of his
heroism and integral parts of this course.

COMPUTER LITERACY

ICT Fundamentals of Typing (Lec / Lab – 3 units)

Course Description:

This course is designed to help the students gain an understanding on DOS or Disk
Operating System, which is popularly used for Personal computer. It deals with the master
programs for computer management and provides a means of control for computer
operations. It also includes lesson on the proper posture and techniques in computer
typing, windows environment including word processing and electronic spreadsheet.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

P.E.111 Self-Testing Activities (2 units)

Course Description:

It deals with the different activities like stunt, tumbling, and gymnastics. The primary
concern is to improve and maintain physical fitness of the body to perform simple and
difficult activity. The body must be flexible with coordination and balance in order to
perform such activity. It also includes recreational activities in which students participate
actively. Show interest, participation, and appreciation in the activity.

PE112 Rhythmic Activities (2 units)

Course Description:
It deals with the different kinds of rhythmic activities like fundamental rhythm, folk dance,
singing, game, and ballroom dance. It includes the study of different dance terms and
steps. It also focuses on the interpretation of learning and teaching Philippine folk dances.

PE121 Team Sports (2 units)

Course Description:

It deals with the study of the origin development and characteristics of the game. It
focuses also in the different sports activities. This course is one of the phases of physical
education, which involves recreational activity, which develops the optimum

Course Description:

This subject is viewed on a significant component of the educational programs that

badminton, basketball, and dance has an appreciation of the art.

Course Description:

This Literacy Training Service (LTS) of the National Service Training (NSTP) is
designed to encourage the youth to contribute to the improvement of general welfare and
the quality of life of Filipinos. The program consist of lectures, participatory discussions
and team building and bonding activities designed to highlight valued and skills
especially self management, teamwork, leadership ,communication and risk taking in
context of community organization and development., and social mobilization; in

This course is primarily directed at enhancing teaching – learning through technology

and lesson planning and to the computer applications and resources used by all classroom
teachers. It will cover the essential skills and technology needed for using computers in the
teaching – learning process. Experience will be gained in the development and use of
instructional applications including computers and educational software. However, drills
and practices outside the class time will be necessary to reach a high degree of

Course Description:

This course allows the students to have hands - on experiences in signing an assessment
tool and evaluate its results based on the principles of teaching. It is also designed to bring
about the real life experiences of a prospective teacher with emphasis on the characteristics
of a teacher as a person and as a professional.

EDU 133 Experiential Teaching (6 units)

Course Description:

This course deals on the actual application of the principles and strategies of teaching and
evaluating teaching – learning situations. It also includes the selection and utilization of
appropriate teaching techniques and instructional materials. It involves observation and
participation in professional on – campus and off – campus classroom situations. Actual
teaching demonstrations, supervision, and evaluation of classroom situations are among
the emphasis of the trainings of prospective teachers. Coaching small group of teachers,
tutoring slow learners, and guiding fast learners are also included in the learning
experiences of the students. Making proper use of forms 137 and 138 and other relevant
documents in the school management are included in the course.
