W hat do you like doing for your holidays? Some people like to relax on the beach, while others go
back to their home town to meet up with old friends and family. But if you’re the adventurous type
and you want a complete change when on holiday, then why not think about going to Laos? ‘Where?’ I hear
you say.Well, yes, Laos is pretty remote. If you look on a map, you’ll see that it’s in South-East Asia and shares
5 long borders with Thailand to the west and Vietnam to the east. Laos is a single-party socialist republic with
only one legal political party. It has been pretty isolated from the rest of the world until very recently.
Now, after years of war and isolation, Laos is attracting growing numbers of tourists because of its pure
environment, its traditional culture which is still intact, and its very relaxed people. It is developing quickly
but still has much of the tradition that has sadly disappeared elsewhere in the region.Village life is refreshingly
10 simple, and in the capital, Vientiane, the traffic is far less oppressive than in larger South-East Asian cities
like Bangkok in Thailand or Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Then there is the royal city of Luang Prabang,
where you can watch hundreds of Buddhist monks move silently around ancient monasteries.
Travellers looking for nature, adventure or both can explore huge unexploited natural areas. Kayaking,
rafting, rock climbing and biking are all available, but it’s the combination of trekking and rural life that
15 is most popular. These trips allow you to walk in spectacular natural scenery and, at the same time, to
experience the ‘real Laos’ by staying in a village. So, if you’re looking for new experiences next summer, Laos
could be just the place to go. ‘Laos is different.’
