0 LIFTING OF SLABS

Lifting or spreader beam will be used when lifting VARIAX hollow core slab. Tile lifting
angle of the lifting chains can be at a maximum, 60'.

The lifting capacity of the lifting clamps cannot be exceeded. The fixing of the clamps
must be perpendicular to the slab. Less than 3 m long slabs can be lifted without lifting
or spreader beam, if the lifting angle is equal or less than 100’. The length of the lifting
chains/wire ropes must be then at least 10 m.

A safety chain of the lifting device must be always used when lifting and it is always
tightened and secured by locking. The lifting device is fixed so that the safety chain
can be released from the already installed side of the floor. The chain must not be
released until the slab is 100 mm, from the support.

The lifting of the slabs is carried out from near the ends of the slab so that three must
be 200 mm free space between the clamp and the end of the slab. The length of
surface gripped is 500 mm. The gripping must be tight on the edge surface of the slab.

The clamps must be placed centrally on the slab. The eccentricity of centre of gravity
of slabs must be taken into account by removing clamps or other lifting devices so that
the slab is in horizontal position, if the slab has not been designed to be installed in the
inclined position.

If a notch or block out prevents the slab being lifted from its end, the lifting clamp can
be moved along the slab so that distance a is at the most: -

If there is a negative rebar in the slab, the slab can be lifted by lifting clamps from tile
point showed in the floor plan or so that the measurement from the edge of notch or
blockout is at least 450 mm or at most 550 mm.

If the slab cannot be lifted with the lifting clamps, a lifting belt must be used. The
narrow slabs must always be lifted using a belt or lifting hooks. The lifting point must
be 300-500 mm from the end of the slab and the slab must be in the horizontal position
during lifting. It is recommended to use corner covers to protect the lifting belt at the
contact areas with the slab.

If the slabs must be installed more inclined than 1:5 (inclined top floor, driving ramps),
lifting hooks must be used. This must be taken into account when designing slabs.
Sliding of lowest slab on an inclined floor will be prevented by a welded stopper. The
lift from lifting hooks must be carried out by separate lifting chains. It is absolutely
forbidden to use safety chains for lifting, because those will damage the lifting clamps
during lifting.

For the heaviest slabs, more than two grip-type lifting clamps may be used depending
on the length of the slab according to the attached picture.

The lifting supports are removed on site during installation. The negative debars
cannot be removed until after installation of the slabs.

Lifting beam and clamps will be returned to the factory with the last element truck,
when installation work has been completed.
