Laboratory 1 : XRD TESTING and Phase Identification

Part A (CO2: Able to conduct the testing with proper sample preparation and appropriate machine set up and further
interpret and analyze the testing data.) – 30 Marks-

1. What is the model of the machine.


2. Draw schematic diagram of the XRD instrumentals optic available in the laboratory
3. Describe Sample preparation techniques for solid and powder samples. Include drawing or Figures.
4. How sample preparation would affect the quality of pattern and data analysis.
5. Gives significant parameter set up for conducting XRD testing.
6. Demonstrate how slit size, step size, scan rate affects the quality of XRD pattern.

Part B (CO3: Able to use modern IT tools to plot and analyze the testing data.) – 50 Marks

1. Do the qualitative analysis using Highscore Plus software and identify phase that was presence in the
pattern.
2. Re plot the XRD pattern and mark all peaks in the pattern using excel or other plotting software.
3. Make a comparison in terms of relative intensity and 2 thetha positions between selected reference pattern
and sample pattern

Part C (CO2: Interpret and analyze testing results – 20 Marks

Laboratory 2 : XRD Rietveld Quantitative Phase Analysis


Part A (CO3: Able to use modern IT tools to plot and analyze the testing data.) – 50 Marks

By using the HighScore Plus software :


1. Measure the crystallite size of the samples using Scherrer equation and whole profile fitiing.
2. Identify appropriate refinement steps for modelling the pattern.
3. Measure sample displacement of the pattern.
4. Quantify phase that were presence in the samples
5. Fitting the pattern and measure the lattice parameter of all phases present.

1. Interpret the results


2. Suggest why lattice parameter of the same ceramic system can change.
3. In what aspect measuring the crystallite size is important.
4. How does the crystal density affect the mechanical properties of the materials
5. Why quantification of phases is important in XRD testing.
