In 1992, in the context of the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the international

community got together and signed a treaty named as the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change. By that time the 167 nations that signed the treaty had already realized that they
needed to join efforts in order to handle rapid climate change. One of the issues that demanded most
attention was the gases emissions, hence, in 1997 the nations agreed upon a treaty that would focus on
reinforcing programs and solutions seeking to reduce these emissions. Named after the city it was
signed in, the Kyoto Protocol (1997) became the “first addition to the UNFCCC” (Encyclopedia
Britannica, 2020).
