Assignment 03
Chapter 3: Fundamental of Metal Forming
I4-GIM-Industrial
Academic Year: 2019-2020

1. A metal has a flow curve with parameters: strength coefficient = 850 MPa and strain
hardening exponent = 0.30. A tensile specimen of the metal with gage length = 100 mm
is stretched to a length =157 mm. Determine the flow stress at the new length and the
average flow stress that the metal has been subjected to during the deformation.
2. A tensile test is performed to determine the parameters strength constant C and strain-rate
sensitivity exponent m in Eq. (18.4, please check in your handbook) for a certain metal.
The temperature at which the test is performed = 500 °C. At a strain rate =12/s, the stress
is measured at 160 MPa; and at a strain rate = 250/s, the stress = 300 MPa.
a. Determine C and m.
b. If the temperature were 600 °C, what changes would you expect in the values of C
and m?
SOLUTION

1. Determine the flow stress at the new length:

We have Yf = Kεn
𝑙−𝑙0 157𝑚𝑚−150𝑚𝑚
by K= 850Mpa, ε = = =0.57
𝑙0 150𝑚𝑚
n=0.30
Thus Yf = Kεn=850(0.57)0.3=718.10Mpa
Determine the average flow stress that the metal has been subjected to during the
deformation:
𝐾𝜀 𝑛 𝑌𝑓 718.10𝑀𝑝𝑎
𝑌𝑓 = = = = 552.3846Mpa
1+𝑛 1+𝑛 1+0.30

2. a. Determine C and m
we have Yf = C𝜀̇m
the test is performed at 5000C :
160Mpa=C12m (1)
300Mpa=C250 m (2)
(1) 160 12𝑚
⇒ =
(2) 300 250𝑚
12 𝑚
⇒ 0.5333= ( )
250
⇒ Log (0.5333) = mlog(0.048)
⇒ -0.2732=-m1.3187
⇒ m = 0.2071
160 160
And C = = = 95.6360
12𝑚 120.2071
Thus m = 0.2071 and C= 95.6360
2 If the temperature were 600 °C, what changes would you expect in the values
of C and m
From table 18.1 at hot working operation:
0.5Tm to 0.75 Tm ⇒ 0.05 ≤ m ≤ 0.4
We let α be the Coefficient of Tm So at 5000C we have:
0.5 to α to 0.75 ⇒ 0.05 to 0.2071 to 0.4
We don’t have any way to compute value of m but we can compute only with
𝛼−0.5 0.2071−0.05
Using interpolation = ⇒ α= 0.6122
0.75−0.5 0.4−0.05
αTm=5000C=773K
773𝐾
⇒ Tm = =1180.98K
0.6122

At 6000C or 873K
873K= αTm=α.1180.98K
873𝐾
⇒α= = 0.7392
1180.98𝐾
0.5 to 0.7392 to 0.75 ⇒ 0.05 to m to 0.4
0.7392−0.5 𝑚−0.05
Using interpolation = ⇒ m= 0.38488
0.75−0.5 0.4−0.05
When temperature increase the value of m increase but Constant C decrease
So we can compute with that:
At 5000C m= 0.2071 and C=95.6360
At 6000C m=0.38488 and C1
0.2071 𝐶1
Using inverse proportion : = ⇒ C1= 51.46
0.38488 95.6360
Thus At 6000C we expected that m=0.38488 and C=51.46
