High Speed Network (Laboratory)

Lab No: 4
Title: ATM

Lab Session: L01 – B03

1. Introduction

I was set up an ATM network that carries three applications which are Voice, Email and FTP in
this lab. Other than that, I was study on how the choice of the adaptation layers as well as the
service classes can affect the performance of the application.

2. Implementation

Figure 2.1

This figure shows the final network topology for ATM network. The network has four subnets
which are NorthWest, NorthSouth, NorthEast and SouthEast. There are 2 data clients, 2 voice
clients and one serverin of each subnet.
3. Simulation Results

The figure above shows that in Email Download Response, the data transfer of UBR_UBR is
more than CBR_UBR in time average. The UBR_UBR result with approximately 0.16 sec is
higher than the CBR_UBR result that is only approximately 0.15 sec.

The graph shows that in FTP Download Response, UBR_UBR is more efficient for the compare
to CBR_UBR. The result for CBR_UBR is close to 0.6 sec higher than the CBR_UBR scenario
which is less than 0.5 sec and likely a fixed rate.
The figure above shows CBR_UBR transmit stream traffic at a fixed rate for Voice Packet End-
to-End Delay. Differ to UBR_UBR, the graph shows that the traffic stream goes lower.

The result shows that in Voice Packet Delay variation, UBR_UBR delay is higher than
CBR_UBR delay in time average. The value indicates voice packet delay variation of UBR_UBR
graph is 0.00003 higher than CBR_UBR graph which the value is in between 0.00000 and
0.00001 constantly.
Email Download response time

The graph shown above indicates that the response time of CBR_UBR graph is higher than the
Q2_CBR_ABR graph for the email download response time. However, the result shows very tiny
different between the three parameter.

FTP download response time

The graph shown above indicates that the response time of CBR_UBR graph is higher than the others.
The result also shows there are almost fixed rate for the continuous time taken.
With CBR, the sources transmit stream traffic at a fixed rate. CBR is well-suited for voice traffic
that usually requires circuit switching. Therefore, CBR is very importance to telephone
companies. While, UBR allows the source to specify a maximum rate at which it will send.

At the end result indicates that CBR service brings more availability and flexible for voice
application rather than UBR service is suitable for data services, FTP and Email application.

4. Conclusions

At the end of this Lab, I was able to set up an ATM network that carries three applications which
are Voice, Email and FTP. Other than that, I was introducing the choice of the adaptation layers
as well as the service classes can affect the performance of the application.

Finally, I have learned the technology of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which are
connection-oriented and packet-switched technology. The packets that are switched in an ATM
network are of a fixed length, 53 bytes, called cells. AAL1 and AAL2 were designed to support
applications, like voice, that require guaranteed bit rates. AAL3/4 and AAL5 provide support for
packet data running over ATM.

ATM provides QoS capabilities through its five service classes which are CBR, VBR-rt, VBR-
nrt, ABR, and UBR. ATM technology brings different service classes with different affect
performance for application in network. The result also indicates that CBR service brings more
availability for voice application rather than UBR service is suitable for data services, FTP and
Email application.

ATM supports voice, video and data allowing multimedia and mixed services over single
network. ATM also has high evolution potential, works with existing, legacy technologies and
provides the best multiple service support.
