EXPERIMENT 6 (CALCULATION)

A. STANDARDISATION OF SODIUM THIOSULPHATE

1) To calculate mol IO3-, use molarity and volume of KIO3 given at pg. 53, no. 2.

2) By using the following equation, calculate the mol of I3- .

IO3 + I- + H+ I2 (or I3-) + H2O

a) balance the equation first
b) Determine the mol ratio between IO3 and I2 (or I3-).
a) Use mol obtained from 1), calculate the mol of I3- based on mol ratio from b)

3) By using the following equation, calculate mol of S 2O3-.

S2O3- + I2 (or I3-) I- + S4O62-

b) Balance chemical equation

c) Determine the mol ratio between S2O3- and I2 (or I 3-)
d) Use mol I2 (or I3-) obtained from 2), calculate the mol of S2O3- based on mol ratio
from c.)
e) Calculate the molarity of S2O3- using mol obtained from d)
f) Calculate molarity for each titration and then average the molarity of S2O3-.

B. ANALYSIS OF BLEACH

1) Calculate the mol of S2O3- using molarity obtained from A(3f) and the volume of S2O3-
(Refer to the data).
2) Using the following chemical equation to calculate the mol of hypochlorite (ClO-).

H2O + ClO- + S2O32- S4O62- + Cl- + OH-

c) Calculate the mol of ClO- (NaClO) based on the mol ratio from b)- mol of
NaClO in 10 ml aliquot.
d) To calculate mol of NaClO in 100 ml aliquot, use mol from 2c).
e) To calculate the mol of NaClO in 10 ml bleach sample:
1) Calculate the molarity of NaClO (M2) in 100 ml aliquot, use mol
obtained from 2d).
2) Calculate the molarity of NaClO (M1) by using molarity in 2e (1).
M1V1 = M2V2 (V1 = 10 ml, V2=100ml)
3) Calculate the mol of NaClO using molarity from 2e (2).
4) Average mol for each titration.

f) To calculate gram/L of NaClO in bleach:

1) From average mol NaClO [2e (4)], find molarity of NaClO in bleach
(Volume =1 L).

g) Calculate mass percent (% w/v)

h) Calculate deviation between experimental and label values (Refer notes
