a) General introduction

Transportation and communication is compared to the “Nerves

system and blood circulatory network in a human body”.Trnsport plays a

very important role in economic development of a country. Transport not

only facilitates the carriage of goods and passengers but it also brings

about social and cultural advancement of a country. Transport indeed

civilization, the road workers carry the torch of light, they lead and

civilization follows.

and bones of natural organism, transportation and communication are its

nerves”. Transport lies at the root of the whole marketing process. It

contributed to the effective mobilization of the country’s resources and

in vital to the successful execution of the development plans.

Assembling of raw materials at the centre of production and the

distribution of goods to the ultimate consumer is done only with the help

of transportation. It provides place and time utilities to goods by making

them available at the place where they are needed and making them

available for human consumption at a time when they are required.

Transportation requirement has been increasing at a rate higher

than the growth of industry and at nearly twice the rate of growth of

natural income..In the wake of industrial revolution, large-scale

production came to be concentrated in particular regions resulting in

distances between production and consumption centers to be bridged by

transport.

The existing railway network is inadequate and cannot reach the

interior rural areas. The in land water transport is yet to be develop in

Karnataka. Since water resources are not helpful for transport and

- Meaning of Transport.

- Types of Transportation.

- Important of Road Transportation in India.

- Types of Road.

Meaning of Transport:-

The term “transports is derived from Latin word ‘Transport’

which is combination of the words ‘trans & porter’. “Across the other

side” and porter means ‘to carry’. So Transport laterally means to

‘another’. In other words, if refers to the movement of goods & persons

from one place to another”.

Types of Transportation:-

Railway Transportation:-

Indian Railway has become the chief means of Transportation. It

shares 80% of goods traffic & 70% of the passenger traffic. The Indian

Railway is to day Asia’s largest Railway.

Indian Railroad have track route length 62,458 in mid- 1999s, forth

most heavily used system in world, both for passengers & freight all

government owned & operated by Indian Railway.

Some 14,600 kilometers classified, 1, 10,000 bridges some high

speed routes, domestic production most rolling stock & others

components.

Major government investment in modernization in 1990’s. Full

metro system in calculate, rapid transit system in madras & Jaory system

palled for New Delhi, Bombay served by Suburban Railway network.

Road transport generates & accelerates the development process as

well as national integration. Road transport is of a special importance in

the process of economic development. Roads are basic to infrastructure

necessary for the building up of an economy.

Indian roads & more than 1million meters, 9,60,000 kilometers

surfaced roads, & more than 1 million kilometers constructed of graved

crushed stone or earth. Fifty three highways, almost 20,000 kilometers in

total length rated as national highways carry about 40 percent of road

traffic. Around 60% of all passenger traffic travels by road, urban

transits dominated by motor vehicles increasing are of two & three

wheel vehicles, automobiles, mini buses, buses, tracks, large cities, have

major urban bus systems. Bullock’s camels, elephants & others beats of

G.F.G.C.HOSADURGA Page 15
VRL Ltd
Water Transportation:-

Indians shipping tonnage, though sizeable in magnitude does not

compare favorably with other maritime nations of the world. India had

only 478 vessels of 7108 million gross registered tonnages in 1996.

Indian shipping accounts for only one percent of the total world fleet.

In India there are 11 major parts & 139 minor parts. In the year

1995 “3” Government owned shipping companies. Four major three

medium sized shipyards, all government runs, thirty. Five smaller

shipyards in private sector. Major coastal & ocean trade routes more than

60,000 kilometers of inland water ways, more than 3,600 kilometers

navigate by large vessels, although only about 2000 kilometers used.

Air Transportation:-

Air transport is the recent addition to the modes of transport. Is

now growing in importance & popularity. Air transportation is the lease

G.F.G.C.HOSADURGA Page 16
VRL Ltd
important in respect of volume of traffic, but passenger traffic is more

important.

There were two airlines (Air India & Indian airlines) & one

Helicopter services (pavan Hans) owned by government & is privately

owned airlines; latter account for only 10 percent of domestic air traffic

of 288 airports, 208 permanent surface runways & two runways of more

than 3659 meters. Major international airports at Bombay [Mumbai].

Delhi, Kolkata, Madras & Thiruvananthapuram. International services

also from marmagoa [goa], Bangalore, Hyderabad. Major regional

airports at Ahamadabad Allahabad, Pune, Nagpur, Thiruvananthapuram.

Importance of Road Transportation in India:-

Indian is country with an area of 3,287,263 sq km. India has more

than 67% of rural population & 5,64,000 villages, more than 70% of

people are engaged in agriculture.

G.F.G.C.HOSADURGA Page 17
VRL Ltd
The existing Railway network is inadequate cannot reach the

interior rural areas. The inland water transport in yet to be developed in

Karnataka, since water resources are not helpful for transport &

navigation. That’s why road transport or conveyance plays vital role for

the economic activities of our state.

India is a country of village, it is essential that villages should be

connected with towns. Without adequate transport system in India

economic development of any dimensions in supply out of the questions.

Transport volumes in India much less than those in the developed

countries. India has still to go long way in strengthening its

transportation network. The countries transportation networks suffer

from several inadequate & pu8rticular it has little resilience to deal with

unforeseen demands Transportation. Like all industries is largely

influenced by information & communication. Technologies with the

focus being on knowledge of customer needs & value added services.

Surface transport is provided by the Road & railways.
