ENGR103/123-FA19 LAB #1 - Using Excel Due: Wed 9/18/19

INSTRUCTIONS
Go to the Graphical Integration and Lab 1 folder in Blackboard and download the posted Excel file named:
Lab 1 Excel Data File for Problems 1 and 2
Do not make any changes to the data in the 2 columns already provided on these 2 Excel file pages.
Complete the problems listed below using the data in the 2 pages of this Lab 1 Excel spreadsheet file.
In each of the Excel file pages, be sure to do all of the following items:
• Put your name, section, and the last 3 digits of your CWID in the spreadsheet cells provided.
• At the bottom of the 2 new calculated data columns that you need to create that contains a formula,
type the formula used for that column in as text. Highlight these in yellow.
• For each plot required in each problem, make sure the graph is completely and labeled properly
(including chart & axis titles, units, axis values, etc.).
• For each plot required in each problem, add the appropriate Trendline, the Trendline Equation and
the R2 value. Be sure to substitute the appropriate variables for “x” and “y” in the trendline equation
so that it has meaning.
• For all values calculated, be sure to display them prominently so that they are easy to find and grade.
Be sure that the values calculated do not exhibit excessive digits other than what would be considered
reasonable based on the results obtained.
Save and name your file using this format: Lab1,dash,first initial, middle initial, last name, section number.
Example: Lab1-SAWood9. Upload it in Blackboard to Assignment “Lab 1” before 11:59pm on 9/18/19.

Problem 1
As a NASA engineer, you are charged with the task of calculating certain performance metrics for a new
rocket design. In order to do so, you need to know the total mass ejected from the rocket’s propulsion
system during a flight. The mass flow rate over the course of a test burn was recorded. Using the data
given in “Lab 1 Excel File for Problem 1” do the following:
a) Plot the mass flow rate as a function of time.
b) Plot the total mass ejected as a function of time.
c) Determine the total mass ejected over the test burn. Highlight this value in light green.

Problem 2
As a Co-op engineering student at General Motors, you are tasked with determining the work produced
during the power stroke of a cylinder in a new experimental engine. From your freshman engineering
class, you know that work is the integration of the pressure-volume curve. Using the data from the engine
test run given in “Lab 1 Excel File for Problem 2” do the following:
a) Plot the pressure as a function of gas volume
b) Plot total work as a function of gas volume
c) Determine the total work produced. Highlight this value in light blue.
