Title: Home work(Ch.6)

1. What is the difference between composite and non-composite

members?
 When a deck is physically connected to and working with a
superstructure load bearing member in resisting loads, it is said to be
composite.
 When deck is just resting on top of the superstructure and has no
means of transferring longitudinal shear from primary members to the
deck, then it cannot assist in the resistance of bending moments
induced by vehicle loading and is said to be non-composite.

2. What are the advantages of composite construction?

 More efficient use of materials since steel member size can be
significantly reduced due to the incorporation of the deck into the
resisting cross-section properties.
 Greater vertical clearance by a reduction in stringer depth.
 An ability to sustain greater vehicle loading and to reduce live load
defection.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of precast, pre-stressed
concrete panels?

Advantages:

 Precast panels are useful alternatives in rehabilitation projects.

 Because they allow for quick placement and are not susceptible to
traffic vibrations, which may be a problem in projects undergoing
staged construction.

Disadvantages:

 They cannot, however, be easily used on curved structures.

 And have a higher cost than the traditional castin-place deck.

4. What are the points that must be considered when using open rib
system?
 Open-rib system: are used when issues like clearance are important.

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of fiber reinforced polymer

deck?

Advantages:

 Light weight.
 Rapid installation.
 Resistance to corrosion (maintenance free).

Disadvantages:
 Not widely used due to extremely high costs (very expensive).
6.What are the functions of wearing surface?
 Resist traffic wear.
 With periodic maintenance, provide for a smooth riding surface.
 The wearing surface serves the function of protecting the deck proper
from traffic and the superstructure and substructure elements from
associated deterioration.
 The wearing surface can be thought of as the first line of defense
against deterioration for a bridge.

7. What are the advantages of using of latex modified concrete as a

wearing surface?
 Enhance the ability of an overlay to adhere to an existing concrete slab.
 Resist thermal forces caused by temperature fluctuations.
 Has a high durability.
 Latex modified concrete overlay is routinely used to replace the
wearing surface of existing bridge decks.
 Because of its durability, a latex modified concrete overlay is usually
specified at a depth less than for an asphalt concrete surface [1.5 in (38
mm)].
