CONCRETE MIX DESIGN M-40(RCC) Grade

(As per IS: 10262 -2009)

A-1) Design Stipulation

Characteristics Compressive strength at 28 days 40 N/mm2 (MoRT&H Table 1700-1)
Maximum size of Aggregate 20 mm
Workability , Slump 75 - 125 mm (MoRT&H Table 1700-4)
Degree o f Quality control Good
Type of exposure Severe
Target mean strength 52.0 N/mm2 from (MoRT&H Table 1700-5)
A-2) Test Data for Material
Type of Cement and Grade ACC OPC – 43 grade cement
Type of Admixture Apple Chemie (Visco flux-2202)
Specific gravity of Cement 3.15
Specific gravity of Admixture 1.016
Specific gravity of 20mm 2.858
Specific gravity of 10mm 2.833
Specific gravity of fine aggregate (Classified sand) 2.830
Water Absorption of 20 mm 0.83%
Water Absorption of 10 mm 0.98%
Water absorption of Fine aggregate (Classified sand) 1.38%

A-3) Target Mean Strength

Standard deviation obtained from Table - 1 of IS: 10262 - 2009 is 5

Hence the Target Mean Strength
ft = f ck + k*s
ft =40+ 1.65 x 5.0 48.25 N/mm3
Where ft = Target mean compressive strength at 28 days
f ck
= Characteristic compressive strength at 28 days
s = Standard deviation
k = 1.65 (Statistical value)
Target Mean strength as per Table 1700 - 5 of MORT&H 52.0 N/mm2
A-4) Selection of (Free) Water - Cement Ratio
From MORT&H Table 1700-2, maximum water cement ratio = 0.45
0.40<0.45(maximum allowed as per MORT&H is 0.45)
Based on trails, adopt water cement ratio as 0.34
Hence O.K
A-5) Selection of Water content
From Table 2, maximum water content = 186 kg. (For 35 mm slump range)
For 20 mm Aggregate
Water for 25 to 50 mm Slump(in kg.) 186
Required Slump (in mm) 95
Estimated water for required slump(in kg.)
202.74

As super plasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced to 20 % and above.
Based on trials with super plasticizer water content reduction has been achieved. 30.40%
Hence, the arrived Water Content = 141
A-6) Selection of Cement Content
Water / Cement ratio 0.34
Hence Cement content 141 / 0.34 = 415 kg/m3
Check for exposure condition from Table 1700-2 of MoRT&H
Minimum Cement Content = 360 kg /m3
Hence cement content O.K

CONCRETE MIX DESIGN M-40(RCC) Grade

(As per IS: 10262 -2009)

A-7) Proportion of Volume of Coarse Aggregate and Fine aggregate

From table-3, As per IS 10262 - 2009
Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate and fine
aggregate Zone-II for Water-Cement ratio of 0.5 = 0.62
In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.37. Therefore, volume of coarse
aggregate is required to be increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As
the water-cement ratio is lower by 0.05, the proportion of volume of coarse
aggregate is increased by 0.01(at the rate of -/+ 0.01for every + 0.05 change in
water-cement ratio). Therefore, corrected proportion of volume of coarse
aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.40=0.60

Therefore, Volume of Coarse Aggregate = 0.62

Volume of fine Aggregate = 1 - 0.62 = 0.38

A-8) Selection of Admixture Content

% of Admixture by wt of Cement 0.95%

Admixture by wt of Cement = 415 X 0.95% = 3.94
A-9) Mix Calculations
a) Volume of Concrete = 1 M3
b) Volume of Cement
Mass of Cement 1
