How Pollution is Affecting India domestically and internationally?


The presence of the substance in the environment which has a harmful effect on it is called pollution. There
are four major forms of pollution that include; air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, plastic pollution, soil
contamination, thermal pollution and light pollution. Pollution harms the whole environment, people and wildlife.
In India, a wide range of modern pollutants have emerged in recent years. Most of these pollutants are rarely
present in excessively large concentrations, so effects on health are usually far from immediate or obvious.
Problems on pollution are a serious concern in the developing world, where large number of people are affected by
traditional sources of pollution such as industrial emissions, poor sanitation, inadequate waste management,
contaminated water supplies.

Recently WHO released an urban air quality database. It shows that most Indian cities are becoming death traps
because of very high air pollution levels. In recent years, India appears among the group of countries with highest
particulate matter (PM) levels.
There are many reasons that led to all pollution levels very high. Some of them are listed below:
(I) Rapid growing industrialization
(II) Destruction of forests,
(III) Emissions of vehicles,
(IV) Land degradation due to the use of poisonous insecticide for agriculture,
(V) Shortage of natural resources, rampant burning of wood fuel and many more.

Pollution is affecting India in many ways. Pollution is the main reason to lead lots of diseases, health issues and
long-term livelihood impact. Air quality in Indian has become worsened in past years. Around 1.2 million deaths in
2018 caused due to air pollution. The environment organisation Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) released
a report regarding the life expectancy of Indians. Life expectancy has reduced by over 2.6 years in Asian Countries.

Pollution has now become a matter of greater concern in India as it affects the Nation on many factors such
as Economy, Health, Water and Sanitation, Renewable Energy, Average life of citizens, Employment and many
more. Pollution has a major in the Economy of India. In 2016, the World Bank study released a report regarding the
impact of pollution on GDP. India lost more than 8.5% of its GDP in 2013 due to air pollution. Air pollution has

impacts at International level also for India. Industries contribute significantly to India's economic growth and
development. If India’s economic growth slips, it makes it difficult to attract investment from foreign countries.
Thus, it becomes difficult to generate more employment also.
