Design of the study

This research is a cross-sectional survey design, which involves taking a cross-section of the
population and finding out the prevalence of a phenomenon, problem, attitudes or issues, in
order to answer questions regarding mathematics anxiety and gender differences in mathematics
performance in Elementary Schools of Lubang Island.

According to Glass and Hopkins, (1984), descriptive research involves gathering data that
describe events and then organizes, tabulates, depicts, and describes the data collection. It
usually uses informational materials such as graphs and charts to aid the reader in understanding
the data distribution. Because the human mind cannot extract the full importance of a large mass
of raw data, descriptive statistics are very important in reducing the data to manageable form.

Location of the study

This research was conducted in Elementary Schools of Lubang Island. Based on our research, it
shows that girls have a higher mathematics anxiety than boys. The higher mathematics anxiety
really affects the mathematics performance as well. Being familiar with your local community is
a big factor to have an access to develop immediate rapport with respondents, hence making data
collection less cumbersome motivated the researcher to pick the particular schools as an area of
study.
