Bayani at Kabayanihan

A “bayani” in Tagalog is somebody that saves lives; however they be afraid,


they are brave enough to do something still. The essential trait of a hero is bravery.

Dr. Jose Rizal wo, during the Spanish colonization sacrificed his life for the
freedom for our country and the Filipino people.

General Antonio Luna who died fighting the Filipino-American war in the
hands of the Filipino soldiers in Kawit, Cavite.

Simple acts of helping and serving people is called “bayanihan”. And being a
hero does not require sacrificing life for a cause of the country.

Dr. Jose Rizal

- Is our national hero.


- He fought and sacrificed himself for the freedom of our nation.

The different countries that honor Rizal through statues and memorials are;
Chanakyapuri in Medan and New Delhi in India. A road in Seattle is also dedicated
to our late hero. And here in our country, there are streets, towns/cities, universities,
and provinces named after him, and a famous park in Manila called Luneta Park has
a standing bronze sculpture of him.

Three species has been also named after Rizal; the Draco rizali (a small lizard
called flying dragon), Apogania rizali (a rare kind of beetle with five horns) and the
Rhacophorus rizali (a peculiar frog species).

The American criteria for National Hero that made Rizal the top choice:

1. He must be a Filipino.
2. He is already dead.

3. He displayed unconditional love for his country.
4. He was a low temper.
5. He had died dramatically.

Progressive Education

The progressive school movement reviewed the taken-for-granted idea that


the school is an enclave where the student learns first then later, after graduation
gets a job and hopefully becomes successful. Against this idea, progressive
education practiced and believes in the principle that the school is an integral in
working and promoting the well-being of the community all at the same time.

Social Entrepreneurship

Rizal formed the Dapitan’s first farmer’s cooperative called the Sociedad de
Agriculture Dapitanos, where the Industrial Partner or socios industrials and
shareholders or socio accionistas funded the capital.

Community Development

- Rizal developed Dapitan’s first park


- Built one-doctor hospital and paid using his own money.

Rizal is not only known and admired for possessing intellectual brilliance but
also for his bravery to stand and resist the Spanish colonial government.

Rizal awakened the mind and perspective of Filipino’s towards Nationalism,


he wanted the Filipinos to see and realize how grim their situation is and to do
something about it. Without recklessness to start a bloodbath, he used the ink of his
pen and the sharpness of his mind to let the Filipino people know what must be done
and be begone.
