[ FIRST SCENE]

*RYAN KNEELING AT THE ALTAR

“Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I
will show you; And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And
so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

RUFFA: So Abram went forth as the Lord had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was
seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

*RYAN, LEAH AND CATH*

ROMER: Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all their possessions which they had
accumulated, and the persons which they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of
Canaan.

RUFFA: The Lord appeared to Abram and said,

ROMER: “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had
appeared to him.”

*RYAN MAKE ALTAR*

RUFFA: Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with
Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name
of the Lord. Abram journeyed on, continuing toward the Negev.

RUFFA: Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the
famine was severe in the land. It came about when he came near to Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife

ROMER (ABRAM): I know that you are a beautiful woman; and when the Egyptians see you, they will say,
‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. Please say that you are my sister so that
it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.”

RUFFA: The Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised
her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. Therefore, he treated Abram well for
her sake; and gave him sheep, oxen, donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys and camels.

*ELLAH ENTERS AND PRAISES LEAH*

But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. Pharaoh
called Abram and said,

*THUNDER SOUND*
ROMER: “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? Why did
you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife, take her and go.”

RUFFA: Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him away, with his wife and all
that belonged to him.

*RYAN LEAVES BRINGING LEAH AND THEIR THINGS*

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying,

ROMER: “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.”

“O Lord God , what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of
Damascus?”

“Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.”

RUFFA: Then behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

ROMER: “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be
your heir.”

RUFFA: And He took him outside and said,

“Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. So shall your
descendants be

RUFFA: ” Then he believed in the Lord ; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. And He said to him,

ROMER; “I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”
RUFFA; He said,

ROMER: “O Lord God, how may I know that I will possess it?”

RUFFA: He said to him,

ROMER: “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, and a three-year-old female goat, and a three-year-old ram,
and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

RUFFA: Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two and laid each half opposite the other. The
birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. Now when the sun was
going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.

God said to Abram,

ROMER (GOD): “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs,
where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. But I will also judge the nation whom
they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. As for you, you shall go to your
fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth generation they will return
here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”
RUFFA: It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a
smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a
covenant with Abram, saying,

ROMER (GOD):“To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great
river, the river Euphrates: and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim and the Amorite and the
Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.”

ROMER: Now Sarai, Abram’s wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name
was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram

RUFFA (SARAI), “Now behold, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my
maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her.”

ROMER: And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. After Abram had lived ten years in the land of
Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as
his wife. He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her
mistress was despised in her sight. And Sarai said to Abram,

RUFFA (SARAI): “May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she
saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the Lord judge between you and me.”

RUFFA: But Abram said to Sarai,

ROMER (ABRAM): “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight.”

RUFFA: So, Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence. Now the angel of the Lord found
her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

She said,

RUFFA (ANGEL) “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from and where are you going?”

ROMER: Sarai said,

RUFFA (HAGAR): “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

ROMER: Then the angel of the Lord said to her,

RUFFA (ANGEL): “Return to your mistress and submit yourself to her authority.”

ROMER: Moreover, the angel of the Lord said to her,

RUFFA (ANGEL): “I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count.”
“Behold, you are with child, and you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the
Lord has given heed to your affliction. He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against
everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.”

ROMER: Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her,

RUFFA (ANGEL): “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing
Him?”

ROMER: Therefore, the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. So,
Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was
eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.

RUFFA: Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him,

ROMER (GOD): “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. I will establish My covenant
between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.”

RUFFA: Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,

ROMER (GOD): “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude
of nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I have
made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make
nations of you, and kings will come forth from you. I will establish My covenant between Me and you
and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to
you and to your descendants after you. I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of
your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

RUFFA: God said further to Abraham,

ROMER (GOD): “Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you
throughout their generations. This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your
descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall be circumcised in the
flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. And every male
among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is
born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants. A
servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus
shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. But an uncircumcised male who is not
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My
covenant.”

RUFFA: Then God said to Abraham,

ROMER (GOD): “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I
will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of
nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

RUFFA: Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart,
ROMER (ABRAM): “Will a child be born to a man one hundred-year-old? And will Sarah, who is ninety
years old, bear a child?”

RUFFA: And Abraham said to God,

ROMER (ABRAM) : “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!”

RUFFA: But God said,

ROMER (GOD) : “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will
establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. As for
Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him
exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. But My
covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”

RUFFA: When He finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. Then Abraham took Ishmael
his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every
male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very
same day, as God had said to him

ROMER: Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. In the
very same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son. All the men of his household, who were
born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

ROMER: Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had
promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which
God had spoken to him. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to
him, Isaac. Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had
commanded him. Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

ROMER: (GOD) “ABRAHAM”

(ABRAHAM) ‘HERE I AM’

(GOD)“Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer
him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”

RUFFA: So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men
with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of
which God had told him. On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.

ROMER: (ABRAHAM)“Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will
worship and return to you.”

RUFFA: Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand
the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.

ROMER: (ISAAC)“My father!”

(ABRAHAM) “Here I am, my son.”

(ISAAC)“Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

(ABRAHAM)“God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”

RUUFA: So the two of them walked on together.

RUFFA: Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and
arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Abraham
stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from
heaven.

*APPEARS*

RUFFA: (ANGEL)“Abraham, Abraham!”

ROMER: (ABRAHAM) “Here I am.”

RUFFA: (ANGEL) “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know
that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

ROMER: Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket
by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of
his son. Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the
mount of the Lord it will be provided.” Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time
from heaven, and said,

(ANGEL) “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord , because you have done this thing and have not
withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as
the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate
of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My
voice.”

ROMER: So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and
Abraham lived at Beersheba.
