GUIDE FOR CORRELATION IN MINITAB

1. Encode the variables (say X,Y) in two (2) different columns

2. Click STAT – BASIC STATISTICS – CORRELATION

3. A dialogue box will appear

4. Select the variables, X & Y (You can also double click the selected variables). Then OK.

5. Lastly, output will appear

To interpret the STRENGTH OF THE relationship, refer to the ppt.

To interpret the direction of the relationship, if r is positive meaning there is a positive

relationship. If r is negative, there is a negative relationship (please refer to ppt)

For the significance of the relationship, check the p-value. If p-value is less than 0.05, there is a
significant relationship.

Example
Welcome to Minitab, press F1 for help.

Correlations: X, Y

Pearson correlation of X and Y = -0.047

P-Value = 0.897

X and Y have a negative and weak relationship (approximately negligible). As can also be seen
in the p-value (0.897) greater than 0.05, which means that the relationship is not significant.
