RESULTANT FORCE

Definition:

A resultant force is a single force which can replace a set of forces on an object. It has exactly the same
effect on the object as the original set.

Resultant of Parallel Forces

If two parallel forces are acting on the same direction then the resultant force is in the same direction
as the two forces, and has the magnitude equal to the sum of the two magnitudes.

If two parallel forces are acting in opposite direction, the resultant force will be in the same direction
as the force with the larger magnitude and have the magnitude equal to the difference between the
magnitudes of the two forces.
R= 12N – 5N = 7N to the right R= 4N + 7N = 11N

Resultant of Perpendicular Forces

If one force is acting perpendicular to another, the resultant force is determined by using Pythagorean
theorem”
