CELL ANALOGY COLLAGE

“It takes 3 million cells to cover the head of a pin, but only one cell
collage to cover the vast knowledge you have obtained about cells.”

Purpose: Your assignment is to create a poster that explains the functions

of cell organelles through analogies. An analogy is when you find similarities
in some respects between things that are otherwise dissimilar. By creating
an analogy for each organelle you will have deeper understanding as to their
function and importance to the cell.

Task:
1. Use colored pencils to neatly draw a picture of a plant cell on your
poster board or butcher paper. In your drawing, be sure to include all
12 of the organelles listed on your “Cell Organelle Information Sheet”.
Each type of organelle should be a different color in your drawing.

2. Using the information obtained from your notes, textbook, and

handouts find the function ( or main job ) of each organelle in the cell.

3. Find a magazine picture of an everyday object which has a similar

function as that of each organelle. On a separate piece of paper type
an analogy to show the similarity between the organelle and the object
chosen. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind your analogy.

For instance you may find a picture of a brain and use it as an analogy
of the nucleus. A good analogy might sound like this :

“The nucleus of a cell is similar to a brain in that the

nucleus controls the inner workings of a cell just as a brain
controls the inner workings of the body. The nucleus coordinates
everything within the cell and the brain coordinates the body”

Notice how this analogy states the function of the organelle, and the
function of the object it is being compared to. Your analogies must explain
how the two functions are similar to one another.

NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE A PICTURE OF A DIFFERENT OBJECT FOR EACH

ORGANELLE – NO REPEATS!!

4. Paste your cell diagram in the middle of the poster-board.

5. Paste all of the pictures you have obtained from the magazines around
the picture of the cell. Label each picture with your neatly typed
analogies. The analogies that you create for your organelles must be
typed in order to earn full credit!! Draw an arrow to the correct
organelle your analogy is describing.

6. YOU MUST DO ALL 12 ORGANELLES LISTED ON YOUR “CELL

ORGANELLE INFORMATION SHEET” TO EARN FULL CREDIT!!
