AnyConnect VPN

How to Use AnyConnect VPN Important


Uninstall all previous versions of Cisco VPN
before you continue.
Mac

Step 1: Download & Install

1. Download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client.

2. Double-click the downloaded le to run the installer.

3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install.

4. Uncheck all the boxes except VPN for Installation Type.

IMPORTANT: If you're using ESET antivirus, follow the steps Setup ESET for VPN
Compatibility to ensure it works properly. 

Step 2: Connect

1. Connect to the Internet.

2. Select Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

3. Type vpn.cmu.edu and click Connect.

4. Select a Group drop-down. See Which connection type? for help.

5. Enter your Andrew userID and password.

6. Click OK. 

7. To end your VPN session, click Disconnect.  

Windows

Step 1: Download & Install

2. Open the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.

3. Type vpn.cmu.edu and click Connect.

4. Select a Group from the drop-down. See Which connection type? for help.

5. Enter your Andrew userID and password.

6. Click OK. 

7. To end your VPN session, click Disconnect.  

iOS

Install & Con gure

Note: Mobile VPN updates and versions do not coincide with Windows and Mac
installations. All mobile updates are managed through the App Store, not the university's
software update process.

1. Install Cisco AnyConnect from the App Store.

2. Open the AnyConnect app.

3. Select Add VPN Connection.

4. Enter a Description (e.g., CMU General VPN) and the Server

5. Click Save.

Connect

1. Open the AnyConnect app.

2. Select the VPN connection you added.

3. Turn AnyConnect VPN ON.

4. Select a Group drop-down. See Which connection type? for help.

5. Enter your Andrew account userID and password.

6. Click Connect.

Android

Install & Con gure

Note: Mobile VPN updates and versions do not coincide with Windows and Mac
installations. All mobile updates are managed through Google Play, not the university's
software update process.

1. Install Cisco AnyConnect from Google Play.

2. Open the AnyConnect app.

3. Select Connections and Add New VPN Connection.

4. Enter a Description (e.g., CMU General VPN) and the Server

5. Click Done.

Connect

1. Open the AnyConnect app.

2. Select the VPN connection that you added.

3. Turn AnyConnect VPN On.

4. Select a Group from the drop-down. See Which connection type? for help.

5. Enter your Andrew account userID and password.

6. Click Connect.

*Library Resources VPN: When you are connected using the VPN-Library network ALL of
your Internet tra c is tunneled through the VPN connection. This may reduce performance.

Troubleshoot

Ensure that you are connected to vpn.cmu.edu.

Use your Andrew userID and password.

Make sure antivirus/ rewalls allow AnyConnect; or temporarily, disable the


antivirus/ rewall to determine if a connection can be established. Kaspersky
Antivrus and Norton 360 block connections to the vpn server. If you are using
these applications, remove them and install the recommended virus protection
software.

Check your email for NISC noti cations.

Review the sleep settings on your computer. VPN relies on the network


connection being active. When your computer sleeps, the network is usually o .

Disable any third party programs that manage Internet connections.

Uninstall other VPN clients.

Do not enable proxy servers; this includes browser proxy.

Do not enable Internet connection sharing for network devices. Windows - right-


click network device and select Properties > Sharing. "Allow other network users
to connect through this computer's internet connection" should NOT be checked.

Uninstall SSH Tectia and then reinstall using the "Typical" installation method.

Uninstall Cisco Anyconnect, delete the Cisco pro le and reinstall Anyconnect.
