About Ben’s background & professional practice

Ben is a partner at Walsh (since 2013), a hard-working member of a

wide variety of groups and organisations, and a philanthropist. His
practice is focused primarily on estate, wills and trust litigation, and
commercial litigation. He is also an arbitrator and mediator for parties
in those matters. Despite all that – and an impressive shoe collection –
Ben can’t dance. And that’s perfectly fine with him. At lease his two left
feet always look sharp and stylish.

A curiosity for learning, the ability to adapt to new situations and a

relentless dedication to creative problem solving underscore Ben’s career and approach to the law. Ben was born in Yorkton,
Saskatchewan and grew up on a grain farm. While the daily challenges of the farm’s ancient equipment were far from the rigours of
legal work, they taught him about perseverance and the value of finding unique solutions to equally unique problems.

After a short journey from Saskatchewan to Alberta for his undergrad – and back to Saskatchewan to earn his law degree – Ben
settled in Calgary where he established a remarkable and diverse practice.

What motivates him to serve his Canadian Bar Association and his community?

His expertise and achievements extend far beyond the walls of Walsh. Ben has served as an Alberta Council member (to its
conclusion in 2019) and serves as Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s Civil Litigation and Wills & Trusts sections. He is an
executive member of CBA Construction, and a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution section. He is a member and past
president of the Rotary Club of Calgary West and now serves as the Chair of the Rotary District’s International Partnerships
Committee, and as Secretary of the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation’s board of directors.

He would like nothing more than to further serve the Canadian Bar Association as the 2020-21 Secretary. The rule of law is
something that Ben understands and lives in his professional and personal life, both locally and in his extensive international
project work through Rotary in countries where the rule of law is less important or is overlooked. As a natural advocate for less
empowered people, and for ‘bigger picture’ social development, Ben’s commitment to serve others benefits his community well as
the CBA Alberta Branch.

What are Ben’s interests? – “Life is like riding a bike: you have to keep moving to keep your balance”

Ben’s taste for travel, community and experiences drive him to travel often, study languages and pursue a passion for photography.
The same natural and genuine sense of empathy for others and their circumstances that are the core of his professional approach
fuel his personal life. Ben loves to discover and tell stories that connect people with each other.
