1. Why do we study Roman Myth?
- Because it is the body of traditional stories pertaining to ancient Rome’s
legendary origins and religious system as represented in the literature and
visual arts of the Romans. It may also refer to the modern study of these
representation, and to the subject matter as represented in the literature and
arts of other cultures in any period.
2. What are the distinctive features of Roman Myth?
- The distinctive features of Roman Myth are often political or moral, that is,
they deal with the development of Roman government in accordance with
divine law, as expressed individual’s adherence to moral expectation or
failure to do so.
3. What are the contributions of Ovid to Roman Myth?
- The contribution of the Ovid to Roman Myth are his several penned works
centering on both Roman Myth and Religions like “Ars Amatoria”, “Epistulae
ex Ponto”, “Remedies for Love”, “Fasti”, “Tristia”, “Epistles of the Heroines”
and “The Loves”.
4. How important is Virgil in the Roman Myth? Cite 5 – 10 reasons to support your
answer.
- Virgil is very important in the Roman Myth because he documented and
extended the mythological heritage of the ancient Mediterranean to gives us
long-lasting and iconic figures such as Aeneas, Vesta, Janus, and the twin
founders of Rome itself, Romulus and Remus.
5. How does Greek Myth influence Roman Myth?
- The Greek Myth influenced Roman Myth through their tales like Homer’s Iliad
and Odyssey and Hesiod’s Theogony that has been passed down through the
generations, first through the spoken word, and finally written down c. 8 th
century BCE. When Rome was founded in the 8 th century BCE, many of the
Greek city-states were already well-established. Greece even had founded
colonies on the Italian peninsula and Sicily. Centuries later, after the four
Macedonian Wars, these colonies would become a part of the early Roman
Republic. This contact with Greece, specifically with Greek religion and
mythology had a lasting effect on the Rome and its people. Rome was able to
adopt much that defined Greece: art, philosophy, literature, and drama.
Mythology, however, had to be adapted to reflect a Roman set of values. The
influence of Greek Myths was seen everywhere in Rome; in the architecture,
subject matter, and adornments of sculptures, temples, and mosaics.
