PROJECT OVERVIEW
HOMI BHABHA CANCER HOSPITAL & RESEARCH
CENTRE
BILLING DEPARTMENT
• Read through the contract conditions.
• Read Bill of Quantities (BOQ).
• Prepared Bar Bending Schedule for 110mT for different
elements like Beams, Columns, Slabs, etc.
• BBS is generally used by-
• Detailer
• Quantity Surveyor
• Contractor Ordering Reinforcement
BAR BENDING SCHEDULE
• CuttingLength- Steel is ductile in nature & is subjected to
elongation while bending during hooks.
• Cutting Length = True Length of bar – deductions
• For 45 degree, deductions = 1*d
• For 90 degree, deductions = 2*d
• For Stirrups, Length = 2*A+2*B+20*D (For 90 degree hook)
• For 135 degree hook = 2*A+2*B+24*D
BAR BENDING SCHEDULE
•Idid calculated the BBS for Plinth Beam of Porch Area, Plinth
Beams of Service Block, 1st Floor Slab of Dharamshala, Plinth
Beam of Canopy Area, Slab & Beams of 1st Floor of Canopy
Area, Columns of Service Block, etc.
CALCULATION OF CIVIL QUANTITIES
• Formwork- This involves 20-25% of the cost of structure.
Stripped formwork can be reused. The disadvantage of timber
formwork is it can shrink, swell, etc
• Types of Formwork- 1. Timber Formwork ( traditional type)
2. Plywood Formwork
3. GI Sheet (Steel Formwork)
• Method of Removing Formwork- Formwork of vertical faces of
walls, beams, columns, should be removed first, followed by
soffit of slabs, then soffit of beams, girders, any heavy
structure.
CALCULATION OF CIVIL QUANTITIES
•I did calculated the formwork for 1st Floor Beams of Entrance
Area, Corridor Area Wing A & Wing B, and some part of Wing D.
I also did calculation of concrete in 1st Floor Entrance Area and
Canopy Area.

The calculations for

beams of corridor area
are shown in the form of
sample.
INVITING QUOTATIONS FOR PIECE WORK &
WORK ORDER ACCEPTANCE
• A Work Order is generally task or job assigned to a particular
contractor or sub-contractor. It generally includes cost, date & time
of execution, information about location, etc.
• Piece Work is type of employment in which worker is paid a fixed
piece rate for each unit produced.
• Guarantee Certificate is certificate issued by different contractors
regarding their services, products, etc. to Client directly so that in
case any problem arises, they can directly get in touch.
• Document Handing Over is handling over every work done by EPC
Contractor is handed over to Client including drawings, bills, etc.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT
• Theproject is commercial building & construction of all the
elements is done by this department itself.
• This department helped me learn different types of materials to
be used at site for supporting, casting, etc.
• Plywood Formwork was used along with wooden battens for
shuttering.
• Reinforcement of 500D grade was used.
• Scaffolding was done using ledgers, standards of different
sizes along with plane jacks or base plates.
• U-jacks,waller, I-sections, tie-rods, etc. were used for
Supporting.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT
• Site Supervision mainly includes-
• Calculating Quantity of Concrete
• Calculating No. of Ply-boards required for Formworks & their different
sizes.
• Supervising which work is being done by which Contractor, so that
problem does not arise at the time of billing.
• Construction being done as per drawings.
• Asking for RFIs wherever needed.
• Maintaining Daily Labour Report, both departmental & measurement
basis.
• Keeping a check on quality specifically about levels, alignments, etc.
• Keeping a check on proper safety measures being adopted & followed by
everyone at site.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT
• Safety- A HSE plan is devised by safety department which works
as rulebook for every person on site. Its objective to promote
Health, Safety & Environment for people working.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT
• Material mobilisation- This includes Licenses, Permits &
activities as shown-
• Storage, Canteen facility, etc.
• Steel Yard, Fabrication Yard, Site office, etc.
• Electricity, Water & Sanitation facilities, etc.
• Workmen Daily Report- In order to calculate the productivity,
this is most important activity at site. It tells what has been
spent to what milestone have been achieved.
• Work as per Drawings- The work is to be executed as per
drawings, i.e. pits, Cut-Outs, Sunk areas, typical sections etc.
should be taken care off.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT
• Quality- There is particular methodology which is followed as
per Client’s requirement. Different Codes & Practices are
followed for those.
• Daily Progress Report- This is submitted by Site Engineer to
Planning department which helps to keep a check on Pace of
Project & decide necessary steps needed to achieve task.
• Monthly Bill- Payment in SPCPL is done monthly basis to
contractor against the work done by his team.
• Contractor Review- On the basis of different parameters,
contractors are retained or expelled which helps the company
to work with best workers.
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT (SITE WORK)
•Iwas involved in 3 different Wings, namely, Entrance Area,
Canopy Area (Wing A & B and Wing B & C).
EXECUTION DEPARTMENT (SITE WORK)

QUALITY DEPARTMENT
• Quality in Construction is defined as ‘meeting or exceeding the
requirement of client/owners. Quality in construction is
employed with conformity with which specifications are met.
Quality in construction is related to -

• Elements of Quality- Quality Characteristics- Colour, Strength, Texture,
etc.
Quality of Design- Subjected to IS Codes being
followed.
Quality of Conformance- 1. Construction Methodology
2. Supervision
3. Inspection.

• A project quality plan (PQP), sometimes referred to as a quality

management plan, quality assurance plan, is a project-specific
quality plan that describes the activities, standards, tools and
processes necessary to achieve quality in the delivery of a project.
QUALITY DEPARTMENT
• Quality Inspection at Site-
1. Checking points for Reinforcements-
(a) Details & BBS should be as per drawing.
(b) Lapping zone should be checked.
(c) Spacing between bars, stirrups, chairs
should be checked.
QUALITY DEPARTMENT
2. Checking points for Formwork-
(a) Formwork material like ply-board, battens should be checked
for any
bends or corrosion.
(b) Checking of supports, inside/outside panels.
(c) Checking of proper scaffolding.
(d) Execution of formwork should be done as per drawing.
(e) Size and sections of beam & columns should be checked.
(f) Proper Levels and alignment should be checked.
QUALITY DEPARTMENT
• 3. Checking points for Casting-
(a) Check all the activities like cleaning, formwork oiling, etc. before
ordering concrete.

• Material Testing at Site- Different kinds of tests are done for
different kinds of materials in QA/QC lab at site.
• I did witnessed 3 tests- 1. Slump Test.
2. Cube Test.
3. Dry density Test.
SUMMARY
• With an exclusive opportunity to work in 3 departments (Billing,
Execution & Quality), I completed this intern, gaining a lot of
knowledge about construction activities.
