Introduction for hydraulic top bracing system

1. Collocation and composing

1.1 Collocation

Hydraulic top bracing cylin8ers are installed 'between the engine and ship's hull

to detune the natural frequencies, likely to occu~ during normal operation of the

engine. The hydraulic top bracing cylinders are flexible for longitudinal and
transverse movements caused by thermal expansion and varieties of loading
conditions of the ship. The standard installation is on the starboard side of the engine,

but port side installation can be implemented, jf more convenient. Of course,

installing in both sides is better. The standard installation features two or four top
bracing cylinders, depending on engine size and cylinder number.

1.2. Composing

The hydraulic top bracing system is cornbined with the following, parts.

(l) One (or two) pair(s) oftop bracing cylinders

Each cylinder has an adjustment indicator. Non-return valves at the oil inlet and

flexible connections to the pipe system.

(2) Relief valve block

Each cylinder has a relief valve block which has two relief valves for high and

low oil pressure. Thehigh pressure of high relief valve is 1.7 MPa. The low pressure

of the low relief val ve is 0.2 MPa.

(3) Pump station

The pump station has two pumps, one pressure control valve and oil tank with
sight glass and level switch for alarm,

(4) Control box

The control box with switches and power/alarm-indicator is interconnected with

the ship's control system.

(5) Oil accumulator

Each pair of cylinder has an oil accumulator to stabilities pressure of the system.
(6) Pipe system

The pipe system has an oil filter, two pressure switches, one pressure gauge and
other accessories. The oil filter features a pressure differential indicator. The pressure
differential indicator shows green when the differential pressure is normal. The filter
~ust be cl~an-~d when the pressure differential indicator shows red. The pressure
switch is used for controlling the system's pressure and the changeover of two pumps.

2. Working principle
The hydraulic top bracing consists of single-acting units with automatic return.

During normal service the pump station supplies oil at a pressure of approx. 0.5 MPa

to the inlet side of the system, and consequently this will be the minimum work load
for the positive stroke of the hydraulic pistons, i.e. when the distance between the hull

and the engine is increasing. Non-return valve on the inlet side of the cylinders

provides a rising pressure during the negative stroke of the hydraulic piston, i.e. when

the distance between the hull and the engine is decreasing. The high pressure relief

valves in relief valve blocks will open at approx. 1.7 MPa and lead the oil to the

outlets on back of the pistons, The oil drains to the tank through the return pipe
system.

The oil accumulator enable rapid supplies of oil to the top bracing to avoid the

large pressure fluctuation when the hydraulic cylinder in the event of heavy
vibrations:

When the engine and ship structure start vibrate, the oi I pressure will increase

rapidly. The forces are transferred through the top bracing cylinder which will act as

rigid connections and thereby detune the natural frequencies.

When the ship arrives to port, the engine gives a telegraph order "finish with

engine". The order automatically stops the pump station and activates the solenoid

valves in the relief valve block which shift each top bracing cylinder to "low". The

top bracing cylinders thus immediately reduce their work pressure from max.l.7 MPa

7

to approx. 0.2 MPa.

Before start-up,· the engine gives a telegraph order "stand by". The order
automatically starts the pump station and de-activates the solenoid valves in the relief
valve block. Each top bracing cylinder shift to "high", and the work load in the top
bracing cylinders will build up to approx. 0.5 MPa at standstill, and max. 1.7 MPa

when the engine is started.

3. Maintenance

In normal navigation, the position indicator points at green band. A position in

between the green and a red band may be acceptable if the present loading condition
of the vessel in not considered "normal". Because when the present loading condition

of the vessel in "normal", the indicator will come back to .the green band. The

important thing is never to operate the top bracing cylinder with a position indicator

pointing at a red band. In this position the hydraulic piston may be damaged.

MOUNTING OF HYDRAULIC TOP

BRACING CYLINDER
In order to make the hydraulic top bracing cylinder work safety credibly and
effectually the installation of top bracing cylinder must accord with these conditions.

"Installationtoierance: 485±5mm
*Installation parallelism: :S; 10

*Service tolerance: 485±1 5mm

*Service misalignment:

H max - H min ~ 5mm

E rrux - E min :S 5mm

*Required rigidity ofthe casing side installation point:

Force per bracing: I 27KN, Max. Corresponding deflation of casing side: O.5Imm.

In the horizontal and vertical direction of the top bracing cylinder, force per

bracing: 22KN, max. Corresponding deflation of casing side: 2mm.

*The accumulator should be installed in the middle of two hydraulic cylinders.

*Pump station to be installed 1-5 m below the hydraulic cylinder.

*Pipe systemoz? mm. In order to take- down the pipes expediently, the pipes must

not be connected by welded seams.

In order to install the hydraulic top bracing system correctly, the steps to be
followed.

1. Preparation before installation:

I.l Check that all parts are present and in good condition. Clean the parts of any

protective material or dirt.

1.2 Inspect the top bracing installation locations and check that the support

brackets on hull side are correctly executed and in right positions. The

support structure must either be in the center line of a cross grinder or

reinforced in some way.

2. Welding flanges

2.1 The fitting tool for top bracing is pre-adjusted to the correct build-in length.

Mount the two welding flanges on the fitting tool.

2.2 Rig the tool in the chain block and elevate it to the correct height with the
large welding flange facing the hull side.

2.3 Suspend the tool against the engine fix point and measure the largest gap
between the hull fix point and the large welding flange. Calculate the

inclination. Make a special steel shim, which make the gap suitability, the

angle is less than 1°. That is said "the build-in length OK, parallelism OK".

2.4 Tack weld the flange for the engine fix point.

2.5Tack weld the flange for the hull side fix point.
2.6Check the welding flanges again. If the flanges in correct positions, weld the
flanges firmly, whether go back to step 2 and continue from the step.

3. Mounting the top bracing cylinder

3.1 Remove the protection cap. Tie a strap around a top bracing cylinder and rig

it in the chain block. Do not remove the transport brackets, unless it is

necessary.(The unit will fall apart.)

3.2 Elevate the top bracing cylinder to the correct position and mount it on the

hull fix point. Adjust the cylinder in horizontal direction' so that the

mounting bolts in the middle of the slotted holes.

3.3Remove the transport brackets, while making sure that the parts do not fall

apart. Adjust that the position indicator, make sure that the indicator is
pointing at the green band.

3.4Mount the hydraulic cylinder on the engine fixes point. Adjust the

cylinder in the vertical direction so that the mounting bolts are in the middle

of the slotted holes.

TESTING AND ADJUSTMENT OF

HYDRAULIC TOP BRACING SYSTEM

I. Remove the top bracing cylinders, the accumulator and the hydraulic filter

from system. Connect the others into the flushing equipment. After completing

the flushing, remove all flushing equipment, re-install the hydraulic filter, the
accumulator and the top bracing cylinder and re-assemble the pipe system.
2. Open all ball valves in the system and allow oil drainage back to the oil TK.
Check that the oil level in the TK is at maximum by inspecting the sight glass

on the oi I level indicator. Add oil if necessary. Don't add oil when the pump

station is running.

3. Check the electric line. Make sure that it is correct, and then open the main

switch. The power lamp indication on. Close the ball valve which is installed
before oil inlet of top bracing cylinder. Check pump functioning by starting and

stopping the system in various models on the control box.

3.1 Select "pump I". Push "start" on the control box. The pump I Start running.

If the pressure has not reached 0.14MPa after 60 seconds, the pump 1 will

stop, and the alarm indication "C I" (change 1) will be given locally and in

the erigine control room by red lamps.

3.2 Select "auto 1,;: Push "start" on the control box. The pump 1 start running. If

the pressure has not reached 0.14MPa after 60 Seconds, the pump I will stop

and the pump 2 will start, and the alarm indication "C I" will be given locally.

If the pressure has not reached 0.14MPa after another 60 seconds, pump 2

will stop and the alarm indication "C 2" (change 2) will be given and in the

engine control room by red lamp. This time the hydraulic top bracing system

must be checked and repaired.

3.3 Select "auto 2". The operation parameters are similar to those for "auto I".

3.4 Select "pump 2". The operation parameters are similar to those for "pump 1".

3.5 After fixing all breakdowns, push the rest button and check that the local and
remote red alarm indications are turned off.
3.6 Stop the pump station, after all models are returned normal.
4. Push "start" on the control box. Open all ball valves in the system. Close the ball

valve near the accumulator. Set the pressure switch in "low pressure". Make the

pipe system and the accumulator be filled with oil.

5. Check the filling of the top bracing cylinders one by One by opening the relevant
ball valves while making sure that the remaining cylinders are closed off. The air

will be automatically driven out of the system through the return pipes device.

One cylinder is full when a constant flow of oil is observed after opening the air
bleed screw in the relief valve block.

6. Check that the pressure differential indicator at oil filter shows green indication.

The pressure gauge on the pump station showed red approx. O.2-0AMPa.

7. Adjust the pressure to approx. 5bar by the pump station pressure control valve.

Check all the low pressure relief valves one by one. The pressure gauge on the

relief valve should read approx.O.2MPa.

8. Set the pressure switch to "high pressure" on the control box. Close the ball
valve outlet of the filter. Adjust the pressure to approx. 2.0MPa by the pressure

control valve on the pump station, then re-opening the ball valve. The pressure

will under normal circumstances stabilize at 1.7-1.9MPa.

9. Check all the high pressure relief valves one by one in the same mane as the low

pressure to 1.7MPa by adjusting the high pressure relief valve. (The pressure

is pre-adjusted from the factory to approx.L7MPa.)

10. Re-adjust the pressure to approx. O.5MPa on the pump station pressure control

valve in the same mane as in the step 7. Open the outlet valve of the filter.

Select the switch "auto I" or "auto 2". Note: You must first push the "stop"

switch then push the "start" switch if you want to change the model.

12.1 Set the pressure switch to "high pressure". Select "auto I". Push "start" on the

control box. The pump 1 is running.

12.2 Activate the engine telegraph order "finish with engine" and check pump I
stops and that the solenoid valve in each relief valve block is activate, the
pressure in each top bracing cylinder is approx. 0.2MPa.

12.3 Activate the engine telegraph order "stand by" and check that the pump I

starts and that the solenoid valve in each relief block is de-activated, the

pressure build-up during service in each top bracing cylinder changes over

from approx. O.2MPa to max. 1.7MPa.

13. Testing alarm function

13.1 Set the pressure switch "high pressure". Select "auto I". The pump I is
running. Adjust the pressure to approx. Sbar by the pressure control valve
on pump station.

13.2 Open the ball valve at the accumulator unit. The pressure will drop from

Sbar to less than 0.14MPa. The pump I will stop and pump 2 will start and

the alarm indication "C I" will be given locally and in the engine control

room by red" lamp. If the pressure can't reach 0.14MPa after 60 seconds,

the pump 2 will stop and the alarm indication "C 2' will be given locally
and in the engine control room by red lamp. When the pressure drops

bellow 0.09MPa, the alarm indication "low pressure" will be given. This

means the top bracing system should be checked and repaired.

13.3 Close the ball valve at the accumulator unit.

13.4 Push the rest button and check that the loca I and remote red alarm

OPERATION
During normal service the hydraulic top bracing system is automatically
operated by the ship's control system.

1. Normal operation

Upon arrival in port the engine telegraph order "Finish with engine" is given.

The order automatically stops the pump station and activates the solenoid valves in
the relief valve blocks, which shift each top bracing cylinder to "low". The top

bracing cylinders thus immediately reduce their work pressure from max. 1.7MPa to

approx. O.2MPa.

Before start-up, the engine telegraph orderrStand by" is given. This order auto-

magically starts the pump station and de-activates the solenoid valves in the relief
valve blocks. Each top bracing cylinder shifts to "high", and the work load in the top

bracing cylinders will build tip to approx. O.5MPa at standstill, and max. 1.7MPa
when the engine is started.

At normal setting, the pressure gauge on the pump station will .read approx.

O.5MPa during operation at sea.

position, the hydraulic top bracing system is inactive, and there will be no alarm
indication during operation of the main engine.

High/Low Pressure switch

Deactivates/activates the pressure relief valve blocks on each top bracing cylinder by

shifting the solenoid valve and there by changing the work pressure in the cylinders

between max. L7MPa and approx. O.2MPa. If the switch is in low position, the work
load will be 0.2MPa during operation of the main engine, and the top bracing IS

considered inactive.

Pump selection switch

Pas. "\": "NO. I pump run"

This mode selects Pump I during start-up of the system. A time relay allows

the oil pressure to build up in the system. If the pressure has not reached

0.14MPa at the pressure switch after 60 seconds, the pump will stop, and

the alarm indication will be given locally and in the engine control room by
red lamps.

Pos. "0": "NO. I pump run NO.2 pump ST-BY"

This mode selects Pump I during start-up of the system. A time relay allows

the oil pressure to build up in the system. If the pressure has not reached

0.14MPa at the pressure switch after 60 seconds, Pump 2 will start. If the

pressure has not reached 0.14MPa at the pressure switch after another 60

seconds, Pump 2 will stop and the alarm indication will be given locally and

in the engine control room by red lamps.

With falling pressure, the pressure switch breaks at 0.09MPa, and the above

sequence will be executed.
