On June 17, 2007, Real Madrid sealed its first Spanish league championship under new president
Ramon Calderon with a tense 3-1 win over Mallorca, edging out arch rivals Barcelona due to a better
head-to-head record, and ending an unprecedented title drought. That Madrid went into the game
with a shot at the title was nothing short of a miracle, one journalist1 wrote:
For so long out of the race, booed and whistled by their own fans, Madrid were reborn in
op
the light of a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou [playing FC Barcelona] and lost only once in the final 17
games of an extraordinary season. Yet it was not the triumphal march towards the title that it
may sound. Madrid discovered the unity, fitness and aggression so conspicuous by its absence
at the height of galacticism and their record against the league's biggest clubs was superb, but
they also lived on the edge. They salvaged three of their last four games in the final minute…
Even more ridiculously, two of those results coincided with Barcelona dropping points by
tC
fans.
Every year people asked what would happen if we again would fail to win a title, and how
long we could maintain good financial results. The truth is, we went three years without
winning any title—that’s the longest ever in the history of our club—and nothing happened.
We improved our results every year. And we signed the biggest ever television contract.
Perhaps it is different if we don’t win anything for ten years. But that is never going to happen.
Statistically speaking, Real Madrid will not be without a title for long.

508-060 Real Madrid Club de Fútbol in 2007: Beyond the Galácticos
t
os
“Someone up there obviously likes us,” said English star David Beckham, for whom the title was
only his first with Real Madrid. Having signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy a few months earlier,
Beckham described the league win as “the perfect end” to his time at Real. It was also the final game
for Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos, who was joining Turkish club Fenerbahce. With Zinedine
Zidane retiring from the game the previous year, Figo joining Internazionale in 2005, and Ronaldo
leaving for AC Milan in January 2007, Spanish forward Raul and keeper Casillas would be the only of
rP
the original Galácticos to remain at the club.
When Ramon Calderon was elected as president at the start of the 2006-2007 season, Real Madrid
had become the world’s biggest soccer club (see Exhibit 1), and was among the largest and most
profitable sports franchises globally. In his first year, Calderon further grew the club’s revenues in all
major areas (see Exhibit 2). He signed stars such as Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson from Juventus,
Ruud van Nistelrooy from Manchester United, and Mahamadou Diarra from Olympique Lyon.
yo
However, in January 2007, he also rejuvenated the team by acquiring the promising youngsters
Fernando Gago (from Boca Juniors), Gonzalo Higuan (from River Plate), and Marcelo (from
Fluminense)—20, 19, and 18 years old, respectively (see Exhibit 3 for the championship team roster).
Miguel Angel Arroyo, director of the President’s cabinet, commented on the new emphasis:
tC
The true art of managing a football club is knowing how to strike the balance between
business and sports. In the Florentino Perez years, we were too focused on marketing, and not
enough on sports. Perez’s idea of bringing in the most talented players and emphasizing the
‘show business’ aspect of soccer was very innovative. It made it a true spectacle. However, it
was extremely difficult to manage: the accumulation of stars produced excesses that we could
not correct. It led to big egos, commitments we had to make to our stars, and jalousie among
No
players who were not ready to share the spotlight. So we try to balance that more now. Our
new model is to focus less on individualism, and more on the team.
“We are now in a second phase,” added Jose Angel Sanchez, the general executive director:
The model worked very well initially—we have become the standard in international
football. But we suffered on the sports side in the last few years. And our competitors have
seen what makes us so successful on the business side, and are catching up. Also, like any
content business, we depend on the availability of talent, and we can’t always find or buy the
next Zidane, the next Beckham, or another type of player that can become a Galáctico.
Do
Would the move away from the “Galácticos strategy” bring continued successes on the field? And
how would it impact Real Madrid’s business performance? Specifically, would it cause Real Madrid
to miss opportunities in international territories—Asia, for example, where Beckham and other soccer
icons remained very popular—and limit the growth in sponsorship and licensing revenues?

club, y no pasó nada. Mejoramos los resultados económicos año tras año. Incluso firmamos
rP
Fichó a estrellas
op
tC
