Hilaire, Haiti
Hilaire is a remote mountain in northeastern Haiti that is
accessible only by a four-hour ride on horseback. The telecom
site is located at the summit at a height of approximately 3,000
feet (914.4 meters). Due to the extreme remoteness of the site,
utility power extension was not considered. The system was
designed to allow autonomous load operation from the solar
array with a generator for backup in the winter.
Cedar Mountain, Pennsylvania, USA
On one of the highest peaks in Pennsylvania’s Tioga State Forest,
this site is an ideal location for a microwave repeater station.
The cost of extending utility power over a distance of seven
miles (11.3 km) was prohibitive compared to the cost of a
solar/wind/generator hybrid system. The system operates
autonomously from solar/wind power during the summer. During
the winter it operates approximately 65% of the time from
the generator and 35% from the solar/wind combination.

Pico Basile, Bioko, Equatorial Guinea
Harsh climate and remoteness are hallmarks of Pico Basile,
a 10,000 foot (3,048 meter) extinct volcano. It is the site for
a telecommunications tower that supports communication between
an oil platform tanker ship and its base station located on
opposite sides of the mountain. Previously the site ran 24 hours
a day on a diesel generator, an increasingly costly approach,
especially because it required 4 to 5 hours of travel time to visit
the site. Generator failure was also a concern. The Ameresco Solar
solution is designed to allow autonomous load operation from
the solar array with a generator for emergency backup.
