PE 1: REFLETION PAPER: 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight

Watching the documentary of 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight made me understand
and gain fresh and new ideas about losing weight. My initial thoughts about the documentary, based on
the title, were to be boring and repetitive of techniques and advices that have already been discussed by
various websites and people. I was proven wrong. This documentary not only offers techniques and
advices but also explanations of how and why we lose weight. The greatest asset of this documentary is
that it does not include option of surgery to lose weight.

The introduction of 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight appeals to all people regardless of
size and intention of losing weight. It informs the crowd by educating them of fat. In the documentary
the speaker and journalist, Michael Mosely, visits experts to examine the current condition of his body.
While he does not look overweight, the results of the examination illustrate that he has more than the
required visceral fat, which are fat that surround the organs, covering his kidneys and liver. It does not
only appeal to people who are obviously fat, but also notify every person of the community regarding
the dangers of visceral fat. This documentary enlightens people to not base exercising and diets on
appearing fats but to maintain healthy internal organs and good health inside your body.

10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight also includes different techniques that I have not
known. The documentary provided techniques such as eating dairy products. It is true, when in the film
the narrator said that “when dieting, the first product we cross out are dairy products”. I too believed
that dairy products contained more calories and therefore would lead to more fat. However, I was
astonished with the results of their experiment, that low-fat dairy products enable us to excrete and
eliminate more fat in our body.

The documentary also provided scientific explanations on how our body and small changes contribute to
the amount of fat we gain and loose. 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight explained how
exercising, although many despise doing it, contribute in decreasing our body fat. Many people expect
the effects of exercising, such as weight loss and a flat stomach, to appear immediately after working
out, however the documentary further explains that we lose fat after a day of exercising. Soup is has
also been suggested by many to those who try to lose weight. My thought on how this advice helps
prevent gaining weight was that soup was made of water, and water contained no fat therefore a
person can continue to drink soup and not gain any fat. This documentary however implemented more
knowledge in me as it explained that soup, combining water and ingredients, help maintain the
sensation of fullness on a longer time than when eating solid food with water, which would pass through
the stomach quicker and therefore leaving the broken down food in the stomach for further digestion,
which would not occur for a long period of time, therefore faster sense of hunger.

The documentary 10 Things You Need to Know about Losing Weight provided many useful and new
insights. Suggestions many people know and have heard are given explanations that elaborate and
provide more knowledge and understanding to how these advices contribute to losing weight. The
documentary also imparts new ideas of losing weight, such as regarding that of the dairy products. They
also supply explanations on how these new proposals eliminate fats in our body. Lastly, the
documentary appeals to every person of the society. It explains the dangers of visceral fat, which is a
warning not directed solely upon the people who are overweight and have obvious fat, but also to
people who may appear slim and of normal weight but have many visceral fat.
