Kantian ethics duty and how it is reflected in ethical word of engineering

Deontologist (duty-based) ethics are concerned with what people do, not with the consequences of
their actions. Do the right thing, do it because it’s the right thing to do, don’t do wrong thing and avoid
them because they are wrong. Under this form of ethics you can’t justify an action by showing that it
produced good consequences, which is why it’s sometimes called ‘non-consequentialialist’. Duty-based
ethics are usually what people are talking about when they refer to ‘the principle of the thing’. This also
teaches that acts right or wrong because of the sorts of things they are, and people have a duty to act
according, regardless of the good or bad consequences that may be produced.

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that deals with morality. An engineer with ethics is a person
who is expected to possess the moral integrity with rich ethical values.

Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Accordingly, the
services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated
to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Engineers must perform under a standard of
professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct. Engineers, in
the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall perform services only in areas of their competence;
issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner; conduct themselves honorably,
responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation and usefulness of the of the
profession.
