Fourth Grade Summer Recommendations

Entering Grade 4

ELAR:
1. Read 60 minutes or more with any book you choose weekly.
2. Check out and read a few 2020-2021 Texas Bluebonnet Award books.

3. Create an art project that represents a book you read this summer. Add a picture of
your art creation to your summer journal.
○ Examples:
■ Draw a chalk drawing of the main problem of the story
■ Build a lego figure of your favorite character from the story
■ Bake a food dish that represents the theme of the book

5. Create a summer journal. Share your adventures and creation in the first week of
school.
○ Examples to include in your journal:
■ Paste in pictures of your adventures and add a caption
■ Add artifacts such as a cool leaf you found while on a walk
■ Make lists of new vocabulary words you hear
■ Jot down activities you would like to do, and then write a detailed
summary after you finished so you can remember each moment:)
■ Make origami, paste it in so it pops up when you open to that page. Write
a poem to accompany it
■ Draw and color pictures and write about them
■ Make a collage from newspaper and magazine clippings and write a
poem to go with it
■ Write a letter
6. Review the nine parts of speech. Search ‘mad libs free’ online and print stories to
share with friends or family using those parts of speech. Read aloud the stories.
7. Watch a movie with the subtitles on.

Math:
1. Learn multiplication facts through 12. Practice 6’s, 7’s and 8’s. Build your speed- 3
second recall!!

d. Try making up your own song to help you remember your facts! You can

c. Identify and interpret remainders in your real life - at the grocery store, in the
refrigerator, etc.
i. Example: There are going to be 68 4th Graders next year split between 3
classes. 68 ÷ 3 = 22 with a remainder of 2. This means there will not be an
equal number of students in each class. There could be one class of 22
and two classes of 23 or two classes of 22 and one class of 23.
5. Find the perimeter and area of your home!
a. Use a ruler, yardstick, or tape measure to measure the length and width of any
room in your home.
b. Calculate the perimeter and area of each room.
c. Ask your parents if they know the “square footage” of your home and see if
when you add up the area of each room it equals close to that number. If it’s a
lot less, what space could you be missing?

Science and Social Studies:

1. Check out articles on newsela.com. Read about topics that interest you and take the
quiz that goes along with each article. Discuss the articles with a friend or family
member using these guiding questions:
● What is something new you learned from the article?
● What was the most interesting part and why?
● Do you agree with the author’s point of view? Why or why not?
2. Explore Studies Weekly weeks 28-31 through the HUB. Read the articles, watch the
videos, and complete the activities. Click “play” for review games!

4. Log in to brainpop.com (through the HUB,) and search “US Government.” Watch the
