Research Title: The Effect of Wearable Sensors and Artificial Intelligence Processing on the
Quality of the Care For Dementia Patients: The Future of Geriatrics

Purpose: To analyze several types of wearable sensors used to improve the lives of Dementia
patients and their caretakers, in order to increase the effectiveness and quality of care that the
patients receive.

Expected Product or Outcomes: The products/outcomes of the year of study is a published

article and/ or a presentation of the researcher’s process, findings, and analysis. The research
will be available to the public, with the intention that families and caretakers caring for dementia
patients will be able to benefit and learn about the devices featured throughout the research.
Awareness of wearable sensors and artificial intelligence processing will be increased across
the geriatric field, and dementia patients will receive more attentive, thorough, and diligent care.

Novelty of Product: Emphasized by Alzheimer’s Statistics, it is estimated that the number of

people living with dementia will triple by 2050, into a number as large as 135 million people.
Although this disease has been known since 1910, there is no way to cure it. However, there
are numerous ways for patients to safely live with their disease and receive adequate care,
through the use of wearable smart sensors. This research featured several AI wearable sensors
that are able to assist Alzheimer’s patients and caretakers, to provide the best care possible and
mitigate symptoms. The sensors were explained and analyzed, revealing how each one is able
to provide for the patient and the caregiver in a unique manner. Spreading such research and
information will incline hospitals, elderly homes, and families of Dementia patients to take
advantage of the innovative and practical devices.

Audience: The intended audience of the product is primarily elderly caretakers and geriatrics
who tend to the needs of dementia patients, ensuring that they are living a stable, safe, and
secure lifestyle,

Process:
1. Intensively gathered information on types of dementia, the purpose of artificial intelligence,
dementia interventions/ cures, and several wearable smart sensors from multiple scientific
journals.
2. Secured advisor, Dr. Andrew Gearhart, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics
Laboratory.
3. Visited UMBC library and Lighthouse Senior Living to read and gather information/first-hand
experience of the lives of dementia patients and their caretakers.
4. Conducted interviews with geriatric professionals: Dr. Barbara Resnick and Dr. Sadia Baqai.
An interview was also done with Dr. Sezin Palmer, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University Applied
Physics Laboratory. Sent business letters requesting information and resources from
organizations related to the areas of research.
5. Produced an intensive research paper using past research, interviews, and experiences.
6. Conducted a meta-cognitive data collection on five different research papers entailing GPS
tracking devices used for Dementia and elderly patients.
7. Constructed a website, holding all information and important documents from the year’s
research.
