Chapter 1 - Measurement

Problem 10
Question
(a) A rectangular metal plate has a length of 8.43 cm and a width of 5.12 cm.
Calculate the area of the plate to the correct number of significant figures. (b)
A circular metal plate has a radius of 3.7 cm. Calculate the area of the plate to
the correct number of significant figures.

Answer
For multiplication, we take the measured value with the lowest number of sig-
nificant figures, and use that number of figures in the final answer. Thus, in (a)
we have 3 significant figures, and 2 figures in (b). Or answers are then:

Aa = 5.12 · 8.43 cm2 = 43.2 cm2 , and

Ab = π(3.7)2 cm2 = 43 cm2 .
