Structural Drawing
Structural Drawing:
the design and working
drawings for structures
such as buildings,
bridges, dams, tanks,
and highways. Usually
prepared by a
structural engineers
(civil engineers).

Structural Steel Shapes
Steel is produced in mills to standard shapes:
i) plates & bars of standard thickness
ii) pipe, tubing etc of standard diameters
iii) various rolled shapes of standard dimensions
iv) Designers ordinarily select standard shapes that best suit their purposes and
adapt their designs to conform to the shapes that are available.

Structural Steel Shapes

Nomenclature: The W-, S-, and C-shape

structural members are designated by
a letter and two numbers. The letter
refers to the type of cross section; the
first number refers to the nominal depth
in inches, along the web (web height
plus flange thicknesses). The second
number refers to weight, in pounds, per
foot of length.

· Thus W 14 x 53 refers to a wide flange

beam, with a 14” nominal depth
weighing 53 pounds for each foot of
length. 6

Structural Steel Shapes

In the bearing pile, the

web and flange
thickness are equal,
whereas the W-shape
has unequal web and
flange thickness.

Structural Connections
Steel members must be connected to form a structure such as
bridge, building etc.
It can be connected by the given method :
a) Riveting
b) Welding
c) Bolting
d) High Strength Bolts

Blind Rivets

The pin of the rivet is pulled. As

this happens the pin head is
pulled into the rivet and the end
of the rivet is expanded.
Eventually the pin will break off.
