It is a field of study that is crucial in sustaining health since it is involved in the diagnosis,
monitoring, treatment and prevention of different diseases. Blood and other body fluids
can be used and tested in the laboratory to check on one’s health. In other settings, medical
technologist can dive into other different tasks opening different opportunities, job wise.

ORGANIZATIONS

In the Philippines, organizations such as Philippines

Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public
Health (PASMETH) and Philippine Association of Medical
Technologists (PAMET) are there, maintaining and
upholding medical care’s highest standards; encouraging
Medical Technologists’ involvement in continuous practice
and education in the field.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) conducts annual board exams where in Medical
Technology Licensure Exam is included. This is the most famous examination taken in the
Philippines by Medical Technologists since it is included in the Medical Technology Law.
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is considered as one of the primary
licensing bodies in medical technology profession. Passing the examination may give you
advantage especially when you want to work abroad since this accreditation is recognized
internationally.

LABORATORY SETTING

1. Phlebotomists
This is a type of job wherein MT’s interacts with patients for transfusion of blood or
drawing of blood for laboratory tests or for blood donation purposes. Phlebotomists handle
pre-analytical phase of testing which includes patient preparation and identification,
specimen collection, proper labelling and correct transportation of specimen in specific
sections in the laboratory where test will be performed.
2. Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Technicians
They are the ones who test the samples that were collected from the patients. Specimen are
subjected to the machines for the analysis. Deliberation of the releasing of the result, re-run
or recollection is being made by lab technologist of technicians.
3. Laboratory Section Supervisor
The Laboratory have different sections and in each section there is a head. Medical
Technologist can specialize in certain fields that corresponds to certain section in the
laboratory. By engaging in further studies or additional seminars, one may be: a chemist,
hematologist, microbiologist, blood bank supervisor, serologist etc.
4. Pathologist or Assistant Pathologist
By continuing for further studies, Medical Technologist may be a pathologist or assistant
pathologist where one studies the cause and effect relation of diseases. Mostly they
examine samples such as tissues that may be used diagnostically or forensically. They are
also the ones who may cut open cadaver for forensic analysis.
5. Medical Doctor
Medical Technology can be a pre-medical course since it is a Bachelor’s degree in science.
Some may claim that Medical technology profession is one of the best premed courses that
there is because it dives in the causes and effects of diseases in the body.
6. Medical Researcher
This exercises critical thinking for this may unfold new discoveries in the medical field.
Instead of testing samples from the patients and releasing results, a medical researcher
aims to provide further knowledge and give better ways in diagnosis and treatment of
diseases.

HOSPITAL SETTING

1. Surgical Technicians where the primary
duty is to prepare patients for surgery as well
as the preparation of the operating room.
2. MRI Technologists or Radiologic
technology where assistance of patients like
positioning patients in the machine as well as
the actual capturing of images that will be
read by the physician. (Minimum Required
Education: associate Degree in radiography)
3. Nuclear Medicine Technologist where assistance for PET and SPECT scans are given
to the patient. (Minimum Required Training or Education: Associate or bachelor degree or
12 month certificate in nuclear medicine)
3. Dental Lab Technicians is involved in construction, fitting and repair of dental
devices (eg. dentures)

MILITARY SETTING

Medical Personnel can earn a rank by undergoing training for several weeks. Prior to
training, one must possess the qualities required for the training, as well as the
corresponding documents to pass the initial qualifications. Benefits and Financial support
may vary based on the rank a person may have.

1. Business Related
Due to the knowledge of medical technologist in the healthcare field there is a given edge
for this type of job. Spreading awareness in healthcare products as well as the branding of
new products, customer service, constructing a marketing tactic and marketing strategy,
business development and sales are just some of the job descriptions of a MedTech
working in an office. It is a mixture of business marketing as well as health care services.
2. Communications Related
Medical Technologist can invest in making contents online that are medical related. This
can be used as an advertising platform or can be a start of social media campaigns that are
profitable. This gives you a voice in discussing topics that may promote a certain product or
a company.
