Switches A switch is a connection node between several network users.

User manual Cube67-Diagnose-Gateway 56968_hdb_en_12 36/86

Installation

Unmanaged switches When using unmanaged switches, the network load increases with the num-
ber of users being added to the system.
Impact:
 Each user must process and decline messages intended for other users.
 The response times become longer.
 The CPU must use more capacity.
Managed or unman- Use:
aged switches  Unmanaged switches
in small separated systems, i.e. systems that are not connected to the
company network or program-wide networks.
 Managed switches
in high-speed control systems from a medium size onwards.

Requirements for switches:

 Administration of multicast traffic:
The switch must support the IGMP snooping function (Internet Group
Management Protocol).
 Connection of a control system to a large plant or company network:
A virtual LAN switch function or the use of routers is usually required.

NOTE
Please consider the longer signal propagation delay of the fieldbus in line to-
pology.

Ensuring the real-time The connection of the Ethernet ports 1 and 2 of the Cube67 Diagnostic
capability Gateway to the system bus can increase the system runtime of data
packages and therefore influence the operability of the system.
 The Ethernet ports 1 and 2 of the Cube67 Diagnostic Gateway must not
be connected to the system bus.
 Always use a separate network.

NOTE
The connection of the Cube67 Diagnostic Gateway to an already existing
company network is allowed.

Data security The Cube67 Diagnostic Gateway does not establish a connection to a server
in the Internet. It does not receive and send data.
Exception:
Request of a time stamp from an NTP server in the Internet or Intranet.

Setting the NTP server Adjust the settings in the SETUP:

 whether you are using an NTP server or not
 if yes, the NTP server is located in the Internet or Intranet
(see section 8.8 "Menu SETUP").

Availability of the During the integration of the Cube67 Diagnostic Gateway in the company net-
Cube67 Diagnostic work, the accessibility depends on the internal company network strategy:
Gateway  Limitation of the package runtime
 Limitation of the package repetition
 Mac or IP filter
 etc.

Ethernet:
Term Meaning
10Base-T - Transfer rate: 10 Mbit/s
- Physical structure: star topology
- Maximum cable length: 100 m
- Network cable: twisted-pair cable of category 5

100Base-TX - Transfer rate: 100 Mbit/s

- Physical structure: star topology
- Maximum cable length: 100 m
- Network cable: twisted-pair cable of category 5
100Base-TX is the next generation of 10Base-T. It has the same properties but a
transfer rate of 100 Mbit/s.

Address mapping Address mapping is mapping one address on another address system. Address map-
ping translates addresses of a protocol into addresses of another protocol. This al-
lows systems using two different protocols to work with each other.

API Application programming interface

Interface that a software system provides to other programs in order to interact with
them.

BASP BASP (= Befehlsausgabesperre, i.e. command output block) enabled means that all
module outputs will be disabled and inputs will not be read.

Broadcast Broadcast in a computer network is a message by means of which data packages are
transferred from one point to all network devices.
CIP Common Industrial Protocol
The Common Industrial Protocol is an application protocol used in automation tech-
nology. It supports the transition between fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet and IP
networks. This industrial protocol uses Ethernet/IP in the application layer as inter-
face between fieldbus and control, I/O, etc.

DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

DHCP allows a server to dynamically distribute IP address and configuration informa-
tion to clients. Normally, the DHCP server provides minimum the following basic in-
formation to the client:
- IP address
- Subnet mask
- Standard gateway

EDS Electronic Data Sheet

An EDS file is an external file that contains information for a module. It provides nec-
essary information for access to and change of configurable parameters of a module.
