The Rainbow
Have you heard ROY G. BIV? It is not a name of a person, but a clue to help you
remember the colors of a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But why
really is a rainbow?
It is a colored light usually seen after the rain. When the sun shines again with little
rain in the air, we see a rainbow formed. All the colors of the rainbow are mixed together in the
sunlight. When sunlight passes through the raindrops, it is broken up into several colors the
order of which is ROY G. BIV. These colors form a beautiful bow that seems to join the earth
and sky. The rainbow is best seen when it is away from the sun.
Next time, just after the rain, look up and behold the beauty in the sky.

Have you ever wondered what volcanoes are and why they are called as such?
The word volcano means “Vulcan”, the Roman God of Fire. The Romans believe that
Vulcan lives beneath an island near Italy. This island sometimes spits out fire, hence they call it
Volcano.
Just what is a volcano? A Volcano is an opening in the earth through which lave, gas and
ash escape. As hot rock inside the earth called magma mix with gas, they are pushed upward. If
magma finds a weak spot in the earth’s surface, the magma breaks through, and a volcano is born!
However, once magma reaches outside the volcano, it is called lave. Hot lave flows down the
slopes and destroys everything in its path.
Volcano is not that bad. It helps build mountains and islands. Its ash help makes the soil

Burnay Jars
A place in Vigan, Ilocos Sur is know for its “burnay” jars. These jars are different from
the jars made in other places. They are hard and heavy. They’re not clayish brown but dark
purple.
People there earn a living by making theses jars. This is why burnay-making
is an old craft.
You might wonder what’s so unique about burnay making. To make a
burnay jar, the potter collects big pieces of clay. He dries the clay by letting smoke run
through it. When the clay is dried, the potter pounds the clay into fine powder. Then,
he takes sand and gravel and pounds them, too. He sifts the sand and gravel. The potter
mixes the clay, sand and gravel with just enough water. He kneads and pounds the
mixture to make it airtight.
Then, the potter molds the mixture on a potter’s wheel. He spins the wheel
with his foot as he shapes the mixture with his hands. Then, he bakes the formed jar in
a large oven. As the burnay gets heated, smoke runs through the jars. This is how the
jars are colored.

Phil-IRI Form 1- Post Test
Photographs are the threads that tie together the moments of our lives. Most of us
have been posing for, looking at, and taking them since birth. They record the personal events –
the picnics, the trips, birthdays and graduations. They help us tell the news. They advertise
products.
Photographs give life to our heroes and heroines. They keep the memories of those
we love forever. And more and more, they are used to express our personal vision, as creative
photography has become a popular art form.
Any photograph is based on two simple facts – light passing through a lens forms an
image, and light darkness certain substances.
In photography, light rays reflected from the subject being photographed pass
through a lens in light-tight box called a camera.
The first camera dates back before the tenth century – the camera obscura (Latin for
darkened chamber). The camera is actually a small room with a hole in one wall. The hole
allows the light rays to enter and strike the opposite wall. It forms an inverted image on the
wall. The artist would then trace the image. The modern camera works on the same principle.
But instead of the image being reflected on a wall, it is reflected and recorded on film.
No matter how images are reflected and recorded, photography remains an art.
