MATHEMATICS 7
Prepared By:
I. OBJECTIVES: at the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. create word problems involving linear equations;
b. solving word problems involving linear equations; and
c. check the equation by going back to the original statement.
II. SUBJECT MATTER: Solving word problems involving linear equations
III-PROCEDURE:
B. Developmental activities
1. Motivation
Today, we will have an activity. I will divide you in 4
groups. All you have to do is translate the verbal
sentence into equations. Am I inderstood? I will give
you 5 minutes to do the activity.
1. Thrice a number x gives 15. (3x = 15)
2. Two less than a number x results to 3. (x – 2 = 3)
3. Doubling a number gives the same value as adding
five to the number. (2x = x + 5)
x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) + (x + 6) + (x + 8) = 55
x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 + x + 8 = 55
5x + 20 = 55
5x + 20 + (– 20) = 55 + (–20)
5x = 35
5 5
x = 7 This is now our 1st odd integer. Since we
already have the value of x which is 7. How can can
we find the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th odd integer?
By substituting the value of x.
Very good!
Who wants to find the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th integer?
x + 2 = 7 + 2 = 9 2nd odd integer
x + 4 = 7 + 4 = 11 3rd odd integer
The five consecutive odd integers are 7, 9, 11, 13, and x + 6 = 7 + 6 = 13 4th odd integer
15. x + 8 = 7 + 8 = 15 5th odd integer
How can we check that our answers correct? if we observe that the sum of these
integers is 55. 7 + 9 + 11 + 13 + 15 = 55.
Very good!
Another example:
2. One number is 3 less than another number. If their
sum is 49, find the two numbers.
Who wants to answer on the board? Solution:
Step 1: Let x be the first number
Step 2: x – 3 is the second number
Step 3: x + (x - 3) = 49
Step 4: x + x – 3 = 49
2x – 3 = 49
2x = 49 + 3
2x = 52
x = 26 the first number
x – 3 = 23
Therefore, the sum of 26 and 23 is 49, and 23 is 3 less 26 – 3 = 23 the second number
than 26.
4x+5x+6x = 165
15x = 165
X =11
4x = 4 (11) = 44
5x = 5 (11) = 55
6x = 6 (11) = 66
Therefore the numbers are 44, 55, 66.
CHECK: 44 + 55 + 66 = 165
j = 38 –j
j + j = 38 – j + j
2j = 38
2 2
J = 19
43 – j
43 – 19
24
Therefore, John is 19 years old and Kent is 24 years
old.
Any questions/clarifications about our topic?
4. Application
This time, you are going to create at least 1 problem
involving linear equations.
