purpose throughout the story
by portraying their relationship
as dependent. Denver is
portrayed to experience a
change in character as she had

to accept aid from others was
shown as detrimental to
Denver’s personal development
as it led to a lack of exposure.

A theme in the story is shown
through the detrimental effects of
slavery. The author conveys this
theme throughout the entire story
by using Sethe to recount all
instances of past trauma and
torture. By doing this, the author
is able to condemn the institution
of slavery in a personal way. To
the work as a whole, this idea of
slavery and its impact on the
characters is carried throughout
the entire novel in each
character’s life. Every individual
in the story had been negatively
affected and experienced identity
transformations as a result.

At this point in the story, this can
be seen as the resolution for
Denver. Denver is portrayed to

as she had been challenged to

The positive relationship between
herself and her community
demonstrates the importance of
having aid because they had
given her assistance. This worked
to shape Denver into her mature
identity and provided a pathway
for development from the past.

identities is shown in the novel.
The author uses Denver’s
transformation to demonstrate the
way in which the community

change in her character. Denver
had been challenged to unlearn
her pride and accept humility
through help from her
community. Because her mother
Sethe had always taught her to
remain prideful, it was difficult
for Denver to unlearn her way of
life. However, once she accepted
assistance from her community,
she started to become more
outgoing and no longer dependent
on her mother. This demonstrates
the positive effect which
community has on individuals.
