Planning 1 Lesson 1
LESSON 1 – Introduction/The English Consonants
Skill: Speaking
Objective: To know how speech sounds are produced and the vocal track
and differentiate the criteria for consonants.
Instructions: Do the preparation exercise first. Then watch the
activity and follow the instructions to practice your speaking.

This folder is about THE ENGLISH CONSONANTS

Illustration 9 THE ENGLISH CONSONANTS

LET’S SEE EACH ACTIVITY.

What makes one consonant different from another?

Producing a consonant involves making the vocal tract narrower at
some location than it usually is. We call this narrowing
a constriction. Which consonant you're pronouncing depends on
where in the vocal tract the constriction is and how narrow it is. It also
depends on a few other things, such as whether the vocal folds are
vibrating and whether air is flowing through the nose.

We classify consonants along three major dimensions:

 Place of Articulation
 Manner of Articulation
 Voicing
Click on  Blue words  to watch videos about the topic
The place of articulation dimension specifies where in the vocal tract the
constriction is. The voicing  parameter specifies whether the vocal folds are
vibrating. The manner of articulation is essentially everything else: how
narrow the constriction is, whether air is flowing through the nose and whether
the tongue is dropped down on one side.
For example, for the sound [d]:
 Place of articulation = alveolar. (The narrowing of the vocal tract
involves the tongue tip and the alveolar ridge.)
 Manner of articulation = oral stop. (The narrowing is complete --
the tongue is completely blocking off airflow through the mouth.
There is also no airflow through the nose.)
 Voicing = voiced. (The vocal folds are vibrating.)

STOP SOUNDS
Stops or Plosives: In stops, the speech organs are closed and the oral and
nasal cavity completely closed blocking off the airstream. The upbuilding
pressure in the oral cavity is then suddenly released. The audible puff of air
that is released is called aspiration. Stops of the English language are:
There are 6 stops sounds in English:
 /p/,/b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/

How do you produce plosive sounds?

Plosives are made by fully blocking the flow of air as it leaves the mouth.
Sound is produced when the blocked air is released in an explosion.

FRICATIVE SOUNDS
A fricative is a consonant produced by forcing the breath stream through a
constriction formed by articulators in the vocal tract.

There are 9 fricative sounds in English:

 /f/ /v/ /θ/ /ð/ /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /ʒ/ /h/

How do you make fricative sounds?

Fricatives are made by obstructing a part of the vocal tract.
The air is then squeezed out through the narrowed vocal tract.
The air is never fully blocked, it is constantly released – think of friction.

AFFRICATIVE SOUNDS
An affricative is a consonant characterized as having both a fricative and a
stop manner of production

How do you produce affricate sounds?

Affricates start as plosives then release into fricatives.
/tʃ/ and /dʒ/ use the same mouth positions.
Firstly, touch your tongue on the alveolar ridge (as if about to pronounce /t/
or /d/).
Secondly, roll your tongue into the post-alveolar position (as in /ʃ/ or /ʒ/).

/l/

The English sound /l/ has two common variations in English:
Clear ‘l’ (/l/ before a vowel): law, leaf, holler, melon
Dark ‘l’ (/l/ at the end or before a consonant): all, feel, holding, mel

MOUTH POSITIONS

What is a lateral approximant?
Lateral approximants are made by releasing air down the sides of the tongue.
In both /l/ sounds, the tongue tip touches the alveolar ridge and the air escapes
down the sides.
Dark /l/ also involves raising the back of the tongue towards the velum.
/l/ is clear before a vowel sound & the consonant /j/.
In all other positions /l/ is dark, which is transcribed phonetically as [ɫ].

Clear /l/:
lots, lean, lorry, lift, lob, allow, least, low, laugh, Ealing, listen, letting, alloy,

APPROXIMANTS
The name approximants refer to the fact that the articulators involved approach
each another without actually touching. There are three approximants in the
English language:

/j/ you, yeah  /w/ we, war  /r/ row, raw

What are
approximant
sounds?
They are vowel-like consonant sounds because we don’t block the airflow fully.
The /j/ sound is similar in position to the vowel sound /i:/.
The /w/ sound is similar in position to the vowel sound /u:/, air is partly blocked at the
back of the mouth and with the lips.
The /r/ sound involves moving your tongue close to the alveolar ridge (without touching
it).
