Making a splash
Budapest has long been associated with
water thanks to its thermal spas, but 2017
is set to put the city on the aquatic map
in an even bigger way. The brand new
pools at the Dagály Olympic Aquatics
Arena are due to open and host their
first competitions this spring, and in the
meantime an interactive visitor centre
has opened at the Batthyány Square dock
where visitors can explore the complex via
virtual reality headsets, a 3D film and even
a game of water table football.
The new facilities will be well tested,
both with multiple events throughout
spring and when they play host to the 2017
FINA World Swimming Championships
in July. Hopes are also high that it will
be busier still in 2024, dependent on
the results of Budapest’s Olympic bid,
which will be announced in September.

Hamburg

Built for sound

What do you get when you cross a sports stadium with a
tent and the ancient theatre at Delphi? According to Swiss
architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the result
is the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s new concert hall
complex, which will open for the first time on 11 January.
Built on a dock that juts into the River Elbe, on the site of
an old warehouse, the architectural marvel will contain
three concert halls, a hotel, a public plaza and an apartment
complex, and will be surrounded by water on three sides.
The main attraction will be the Grand Concert Hall, said
to produce optimum acoustics in a design reminiscent of a
terraced vineyard. Broken down into numbers, that means:

High-flying design
It looks like something that’s flown in from the future: part-car, part-plane, with
wings that slowly unfurl like a gorgeous blue butterfly. The AeroMobil 03 is the
sort of innovative creation you’d expect to roll out of Richard Branson’s garage.
The technology under the hood is not British or American, though, but Slovakian.
Built by inventor Štefan Klein, the “flying car” forms the centrepiece of an exhi-
bition that shows how, when it comes to creative thinking, Slovakia (population
just 5.5 million) punches well above its weight. Organised by the Slovak Design
Centre, the Dialogy SK exhibition will be in Bratislava in January 2017, show-
casing the work of 22 local designers includ-
ing cubist cuddly toys by Silvia Lovasová;
lamps inspired by water wells from Katarína
Beličková and Štefan Nosko; stylish bags made
from craft paper by Monika Paholková and
musical instruments by Tomáš Brichta that
wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery.
With many of the designers drawing inspi-
ration from craftsmanship in small towns
throughout Slovakia, Dialogy SK is a fascinat-
ing blend of the traditional and the modern.
Like the AreoMobil 03, it’s a collection that
underlines Slovakia’s growing reputation as a
driving force in smart design. dialogy.sk

T
he saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words, but these days
the number of likes, hashtags and regrams a picture gets is the most
important test of all. With more than 500 million monthly active users,
Instagram has become one of the biggest social media networks in the world,
showing the highest rates of growth of any platform this year according to
smartinsights.com. It allows ordinary people to become publishers, document-
ing their own lives and curating their worlds to share with people all across the
globe. It’s not all selfies and gratuitous food shots, either – a growing number
of passionate snappers are using it to showcase both their own talents and the
appeal of their hometowns. We went to meet four such Instagrammers, who are
using their online profiles to champion the Romanian cities they love.

Gunning a circular saw, Anne Marie Taberdo

attacks a block of ice in quick, practised
motions, the silhouette of a reindeer taking
shape after just a few minutes
“It’s incredible what you can do with a saw,” she says, shards of
ice spitting into the air. “It’s really fast, really powerful, and at
first you wonder how you can make anything delicate, but it’s
mad. You can sculpt a whole piece with it.”
Taberdo is head carver at Icebox, a London company which
specialises in creating just about anything you can imagine
from ice, whether it’s a replica of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine
or a huge ice throne to celebrate the opening of Universal’s The
Huntsman: Winter War. This morning, the team are putting the
finishing touches on Eis Haus, a pop-up ice experience and bar
that will be serving drinks at The Tower of London throughout
December and into January.
While it’s one of a kind, Eis Haus is not the city’s only icy
attraction. Stockholm’s famous Icebar opened a permanent
branch in London this year, with everything from the walls

within Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland,
along with the UK’s largest outdoor ice
rink and ‘The Magical Ice Kingdom’ –
the largest walk-through ice sculpture
exhibition in the UK created from over
500 tonnes of the stuff. In fact, it’s fair
to say London has a fondness for ice,
despite its transport systems suggesting
otherwise. Every year ice rinks appear
outside dozens of the city’s most famous
buildings including Hampton Court
Palace, the Natural History Museum
and the London Eye, while thousands of
people flock to the London International
Ice Festival due to take place in March
2017. Leading the love affair is Philip

It’s one of the disadvantages of ice,
which is incredibly soft in comparison to
other sculpture materials such as marble,
but also very delicate. On the one hand,
this allows it to be formed into almost
any shape an artist can conceive, but it
also means that a loss of concentration,
or just the slip of a hand, can have
terrible consequences.

of prohibition in 1915, the ban on beer
continued long after other alcohol was

independence from Denmark, and beer

asked: what did you do when there was
no beer? Across town, master brewer
Bergur Gunnarsson is also pondering
the question at Bryggjan Brugghús, the

“Beer has connected with Icelanders,”

JASON DECAIRES TAYLOR AND CACT LANZAROTE

This January, a ground-breaking museum opens

T here are few museums that require visitors to strap
on an oxygen tank before they enter. Then again,
Lanzarote’s newest visitor attraction isn’t like most
museums. While there are familiar elements – exhibits,
tour guides, a hushed atmosphere – the Museo Atlántico
stands alone as Europe’s first underwater exhibition
space. A showcase for the work of pioneering artist
Jason deCaires Taylor, it exists 15m beneath the waves
off Playa Blanca, a resort on the southwest tip of the
Spanish island, and can only be accessed by diving.
Taylor, a 42-year-old British sculptor and passion- “It’s a lot of

tureless seabed. Figures cast in a pH-neutral cement act as
artificial reefs that encourage a variety of coral and marine
life. These in turn transform the concrete into shimmering
alien forms – scarlet sponges colour cheeks, exotic algae
animates eye sockets, coral sprouts from skulls.
This is the first time the artist has sunk works into the
cooler waters of the Atlantic. He was invited to create
the museum by the Lanzarote government, which has
poured some €750,000 of investment into the project in
anticipation of its international impact. Over the past

first of its kind in Europe Seventy have already been deposited by crane into their
watery home on the seabed, and another 250 pieces will
join them by January, when the museum officially opens
to the public in its entirety.
The logistics of building an underwater art museum
are, as you might expect, complex. As Taylor puts it:
“It’s a lot of work, a lot of weight and a lot of cement.”
Sinking sculptures in the sea requires them to be as
heavy as possible, because objects lose a third of their
weight in saltwater. “But the heavier you make some-
thing the harder it is to move it. It can get very expen-
sive and very worrisome when these huge pieces that
you’ve spent ages working on are precariously carted
out of the studio,” he says. Even when they are safely
installed beneath the waves Taylor cannot predict what
will become of them. “I’ve had to train myself not to get
too attached because when the crane comes and takes
them away, that’s it – they belong to the sea. Often they
end up looking incredible, with purple and pink sponges
and fire coral all over them. Other times there’s just a
black sludge and everything has died. You have to accept
that loss of control and hope for the best.”
The artist was initially doubtful about working off the
Canary Islands: “It isn’t a tropical area and it doesn’t
have coral or thriving reefs so I wondered how the

Most of the Museo Atlántico exhibits are modelled on

secondary purpose,” he explains. “Through diving I had
seen how artificial reefs could be used to draw people
away from natural areas and to create new environ-
ments, and that gave me the impetus to start exploring
new ways of working.”
Taylor likes to class his underwater exhibition spaces
as museums so as to indicate that they are places of
quiet contemplation, where important natural heritage
is conserved. And like any museum, the Museo Atlántico
has entry and exit points and visitors (who must sign
in and collect a wristband) can only dive accompanied
by a museum guide; a patrolling lifeboat permanently
situated above the museum checks for any unofficial
entries. The guide briefs the visitors on land before
taking them out to the diving point by boat and leading
the group through the exhibits once on the seabed.
“Guides have a key role to ensure the best experience
for visitors, because they are in charge of explaining the
museum from a wider perspective, taking into account
not only the environmental factors but also the

techniques passed down from Kurt’s father to his children, ensuring each
bottle produced is of the highest quality.
Across the winery’s 26 hectares you’ll find all the traditional
Hungarian wines, but among the Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Zweiglet

POETRY IN MOTION
Poet and jeweller Miklós Varga specialises in
jewellery with a soul

Jewellery is one of the most personal gifts someone can receive, which
is why Miklós Varga puts so much effort into ensuring each piece he
creates is an individual work of art.
For almost 40 years the Hungarian master has created handcrafted
jewellery using the same techniques passed down to him by his
forefathers, as well as his internationally patented cobweb technique.
This has led to his work receiving multiple awards from various
international jewellery exhibitions, with Miklós even becoming the
supplier for a number of royal families around the world.
A poet as well as a jeweller, Miklós draws inspiration from various
sources, from man-made masterpieces to the beauty of nature,
claiming that the most important thing is to ensure each one of his
creations has a soul. Miklós’s intention is to create works of art

1 Georgia snow sports 2.0
It’s that time again – the pistes are covered with snow and resorts are
gearing up for another action-packed season. And with everything from
heliski to paragliding on offer, Georgia is number one on our wish list

The main draw

A new-look Gudauri
With more than 6m of snow last year, 30,000 visitors,
and three new ski lifts opening for the winter 2016/17
season, it has to be Gudauri in Kazbegi, northern
Georgia. The country’s most popular resort, this ski
town tops out at 3,000m with 50km of marked pistes,
making it the largest developed area in the Caucasus.
It’s undergoing a €9m transformation, with several
brand new hotels in the pipeline, so big things are
expected. Our advice? Go before everyone else does.

To the outsider, the Georgian language looks like some sort
of secret code, but the truth is Georgia has its own 33-letter
alphabet thought to be based on the Aramaic spoken in the
time of Jesus. Be careful what you write or that K could easily
become a Y or a P. *My alphabet is bigger than yours.

Off the beaten track
Few ski tours lead you to the base of a volcano,
but in the Keli Highlands in the Greater Caucasus

Conquer a giant
Mount Tetnuldi, that 4,858m Georgian
giant of rock and ice, has been a
symbol of the Svaneti region ever
since it was first conquered in 1896 by
Douglas Freshfield (the first foreigner
to summit Mount Elbrus, Europe’s
highest mountain). While climbers
have returned year after year, it’s taken
more than a century for it to be tamed
by downhill skiers, only popping up
on the map for the first time after the
arrival of the Tetnuldi ski resort last
February, when it opened with three
lifts and 7km of serious slopes. It
might be a newcomer, but it’s not

The sports stars

Olympic hopefuls
This winter will see the reopening of Mitarbi, a resort in
southern Georgia, after a 30-year break. With three new
ski lifts climbing to 2,300m above sea level, there are
also building plans for a new eco-village in the area. Its
neighbouring resort, Bakuriani, is also busily preparing
for new developments, with a €300,000 Olympic-
standard biathlon track planned, plus a state-of-the-art
rifle range, ice hockey rink and stadium for spectators
scheduled – all part of a plan that hopes to see Georgia
hosting the Winter Olympics within a decade.

It may be best known in the wine world for its
superior Rieslings, but that won’t be what the

will be working on this winter. Instead, they will

is typically made from Riesling and Pinot Noir
grapes that are frozen on the vine and harvested

very sweet and crisply acidic.

Low flying
over Budapest

Wizz Air has a young, single-type

Airbus fleet from the A320 family of
aircraft including A320s and A321ceo
aircraft. We took delivery of the first
A321ceo aircraft in November 2015
and will take more than 20 more
through 2018. Wizz Air has an order
with Airbus for 110 new-technology
A321neo aircraft with advanced
systems and engines that will further
reduce Wizz Air’s industry-leading
cost base, as well as the company’s
carbon footprint. All new deliveries
are fitted with Sharklet wingtip
devices, offering fuel-burn savings.

INTERESTING FACTS:
• According to our current network, the highest mountain we fly over is Mount Elbrus in Caucasus (5,642m), while
our longest flight over water is to Iceland
• While the aircraft is cruising at an altitude of 10 to 12km in an air temperature of -55°C, the cabin pressure is only
equal to that of an altitude of 2.5km

WE STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE
IN THE FIELD OF HAIR
TRANSPLANT
Dr Turowski was one of the first physicians in the world
to use the Artas robot. That was in his Chicago Clinic
5 years ago. The newly opened clinic in Katowice will be
the first place in Central and Eastern Europe to perform
Dr Turowski this treatment.

WHAT’S THE PHENOMENON

OF THE ARTAS ROBOT?

The revolutionary ARTAS robotic system utilizes a computer-assisted image

guidance technology to increase the number and quality of usable hair follicles
gathered from donor sites.

The ARTAS robotic device is an image-guided system composed of a robotic

arm, needle punch mechanism, disposable proprietary dermal punches, video
imaging system, disposable cartridges, and a user interface. Its extraction
technique consists of a double punch arrangement with an inner punch and
outer punch. The inner punch has cutting capabilities to score the upper
most part of the skin and the outer punch has a blunt edge used for dissection
of the follicular units from the surrounding tissue that minimizes injury
to the grafts.

MOST ADVANCED
FUE TECHNOLOGY

FUE hair transplants can heal faster and more comfortably, with less
discomfort and swelling than linear-harvest techniques using a scalpel and
requiring stitches, which was the case with the FUT method.

The FUE method has revolutionized this field of surgery and became number
one. New technology that automated this method had brought extremely
good results to the patients.
