OVERVIEW
A sense of place is when people feel a longing of belonging towards a place or a city they are
familiar with. When people visit a place for the first time, there is a feeling of anxiety and
excitement where they tend to explore their surroundings for the first time. If they enjoy the place
and it has led to a positive emotion, then they will re-visit or return to the place.
This sense of returning to the place frequently and having that deep connection with the place
makes the ‘space’ become a ‘place’ of meaning and connection. The particular place whether it
be a public space or a building, if it has led to a positive consequence, then people will return,
leading to a ‘sense of place’. This is particularly important in public spaces and outdoor space. If
the planners and architects create a place of belonging and an ambience where people can feel
comfortable and convivial, be it the artwork or the fountain or the seating or the footpath or the
grass area or the safe feeling one feels in the public space, the architecture of the space
contributes to a sense of place.
Most children are born ready and eager to explore their physical world. Drawing on the work of
Jean Piaget, Gandy (2007) suggests that children begin developing their sense of place during
early childhood. Equipped with curiosity and their five senses, young children explore and
manipulate materials in their environment to understand the world around them.
In preschool and early primary classrooms, geography is often viewed traditionally, focusing on
activities that build geographic skills, such as mapmaking. However, the geography discipline
consists of two main subfields: physical geography and human geography. While physical
geography is the study of the natural environment, human geography is the study of the
relationship between humans and their natural environment.
With human geography as a framework, the focus shifts to include a geographic sense of place.
Developing this sense of place lets children know that they belong in the physical world around
them and in the social and cultural world they share with others. Through interactions with the
environment and each other, children develop geo-literacy skills, become empowered, and see
themselves as capable social beings.
SOCIABILITY
This is a difficult quality for a place to achieve, but
once attained it becomes an unmistakable feature.
When people see friends, meet and greet their
neighbors, and feel comfortable interacting with
strangers, they tend to feel a stronger sense of
place or attachment to their community - and to
the place that fosters these types of social
activities.

Questions to consider on sociability:
Is this a place where you would choose to meet your friends? Are others meeting friends
here or running into them?
Are people in groups? Are they talking with one another?
Do people seem to know each other by face or by name?
Do people bring their friends and relatives to see the place or do they point to one of its
features with pride?
Are people smiling? Do people make eye contact with each other?
Do people use the place regularly and by choice?
Does a mix of ages and ethnic groups that generally reflect the community at large?
Do people tend to pick up litter when they see it?
ACTIVITY 1
The pandemic greatly affected our ways of living and for one, the use of our public space has
changed our sense of place under various design considerations like “social distancing”.
The challenge for you now as aspiring planners is to come up with design
recommendations on how to address changes in our built environment brought about by
the pandemic.
Recommend at least ten possible design solutions that will change our built environment. It
should address concerns like social distancing, human interactions, mobility, comfort and a lot
more. Your recommendations must be clear and realistic. Incorporate sketches for each
recommendation.
