EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In my internship program at MONERA ENGINEERING for four months I was
able to participate on Building construction. I was working in both office and site
engineering department in order to improve both my practical and theoretical knowledge
and skills.
Initially I joined office engineering department for 1 month partially. During this
period of time I obtained a great deal of knowledge regarding what is done in the office.
For example I was able to learn about contract document, payment for contractor, unit
cost break down, take off preparation for different item of works, scheduling, evaluation
etc….which will be dealt briefly in the report. And also I was able to create a smooth
relation with the engineers and other employees in the office.
After I finished my stay at the office I joined the site for the rest of the internship
period. Here I tried to grasp knowledge regarding each and every step followed in the
process of changing the plans on to the ground. For example construction of columns
beams, installation of electrical and sanitary conduits, construction of solid slab,
formwork materials, formwork construction, formwork management and engineer labor
relation etc. And also I was able to learn the local languages that are widely used by the
employs so that I can communicate with them by the use of these terms.
The internship program has helped me to improve my theoretical knowledge
regarding the construction of buildings by exposing me to the real and practical world.
And also through this time I have developed my communication skills. But in my
internship period I saw highlight and made me familiar with the real task that I am going
to be performing after I graduate from the university.
In general, this internship experience thought me a valuable lesson regarding what
is happening in the practical world.

AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Every Building construction consists of two basic components; sub-structure and

super-structure part. Unfortunately for this month I haven’t got the opportunity to
observe the sub-structure work (especially foundation part) of the building. I saw only
the super structure part about slab beam and column works. but in office I saw different
things like:-

 preparation of takeoff and payment certificate

 bar schedule
 contract document and specification

As I describe above I was work on different activity in different weeks so in

order to clearly show which activity is performed in which week separately write the
weekly activity.

 Week 1

In the first week of my internship I was mainly reading the structural and the
architectural plan of the site other than visiting of the site. This helps to me easily
understood and be familiar to the site in which I can easily identified the types of the
building. And also in this week the other task was to practicing the working environment
which includes introduction to the worker of that site includes the office and the site we
spend a lot of time in this week by visiting the site.

Weeks Activities
One *I went to head office
*I went to construction site and I introduce myself with the employers and
visit the site.
*2ND floor slab form work is done
*Beam form work and rebar of beam
During my first week I have learned how to check bars on beam.

 Week 2

6
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

On the second week the site engineer gives me an assignment on types of concrete
mix ratios. And I prepared types of concrte mix ratios from construction material slide. In
this week also i visit the site frequently.
Two Activities
*form work for shear wall
*2nd floor beam and slab form work
*casting of column
*about contract document and specification
*schedule
*payment for contractor
*in office work I saw preparing of BOQ,TAKE OFF /PAYEMENT,
REINFORECEMENT(BAR SCHEDULE)

Also on this week form work for slab, beam & shear wall and casting of column
is done in site works. Otherwise in addition to site work for office work I was doing
preparation of take off and payment I know about contract document and specification.

Contract document and specification

This is a file that contains general criteria regarding the agreement between a client
and a contractor. The contractor wins the bid by the rate it provides on the contract
document in the priced bill of quantity section. Since this is a basic issue, I have studied
the contract document of the project. It contains articles and clauses upon which a
problem will be solved by reference.
The items that are included under the contract document are listed as follows:-
 Construction agreement
 General item
 Overtime payment
 Table of content (general, conformity to standard, environment, conductors,
Short circuit capacity, joints, expansion joints, enclosure)
 General specification for standby power supply system
 Geotechnical investigation report
 Field sub-soil investigation work
 Laboratory test results
 Foundation recommendation
 Bid security (Bank guarantee)
 Qualification information form
 Eligible countries
 Schedule requirements
 Scope of works
 Technical specifications
 Drawings
 Bill of quantities or activity schedule

 Condition of contract
 General conditions of contract
 Special conditions of contract
 Concrete forms
 Contract forms
 Agreement
 Contract security
 Performance bond
 Advance payment security
 Testing of construction materials

 Week 3

Three *Reinforced of slab( (solid slab)

*yesterday work continued. Demolishing of form work for 2nd floor slab
*casting of shear wall and lift sahfts
*I saw why shear walls are provided for buildings.

In this week’ I was saw how slab is reinforced and how shear walls are casted.in
addition to how shear walls are casted I know about why shear walls are provided for a
building and minimum number of shear walls on one building.
Shear wall and lift shafts are a vertical structure and have the same work
procedure and the same structural design. In my site there are 4 shear walls and 3 lift
shafts goes up to top.
Why shear walls are provided??
 One of the major reasons is for laterally support loads. to prevent the building
from earth quake and wind loads.
 But in our country shear walls are provided for earth quake loads but not for wind
load.

 Week four
Four *form work for stair case
*slab reinforcement and form work

2nd Month

10
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

In this second month I am doing the same things lastly I was doing like
formworks, rebar, casting, preparation of take off...

Some of the activities we visit on this month

 erection of scaffolding for slab using steel

 casting of stair case
 mixing of C-30 grade cement
 rebar of beam
 Concrete work for slab
 Form work for column
 Week 5 ,6,7& 8

Five *preparation of take off for stair case

*erection of scaffolding for slab using steel
*casting of stair case concrete by using of vibrator to avoid segregation
*mixing of C-30 grade Cement

Six *form work for slab and beam continued

*arrangement or reinforcing of bars for beams
*placement of scaffolding then place the panel on the scaffolds
Seven *concrete work for slab
Eight *form work for column

Formwork, reinforcement and concrete of staircase

Understanding the site work regarding the construction of staircase is another
important issue that I was dealing with. A stair case is a means of communication
between one floor and the next one. The work procedure followed is discussed as
follows:
 An inclined member of a formwork will be constructed and will be painted with
mold oil or a mixture of kerosene and burned oil.
 Reinforcement will be prepared as per the structural drawing and will be laid
starting from a landing beam to another landing beam.
 The formwork preparation needs a special care so that each and every thread and
riser are the same with the measurement given on the plan.
 Once the formwork is prepared the rebar for riser and thread will be arranged
 Finally concrete of specified grade will be applied over the rebar and will be
compacted by a vibrator.

11
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

 Note that the casting of the staircase is done in accordance with the landing
beams monolithically.

Form work , erection & casting of 2nd floor slab

12
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

While I was on the site I was able to observe and learn the construction of
solid slabs. Unfortunately solid slab is the only type of slab being constructed on the site.
The procedures to follow in order to construct the slab are discussed as follows;
 Form work preparation will begin by the construction of supports (Ponte) that will
support the slab. This is done by constructing the Ponte with 50c.m spacing in both
directions. After the completion of this, panels are laid on top of the supports.
 The panel is covered with a lubricant that will help to protect the form work against
damage. Since mold oil is expensive, a mixture of kerosene and burned oil is used.
 Reinforcement or rebar is prepared according to the structural detail drawing. That is
rebar is prepared according to the length specified. And the reinforcement bars are
laid longitudinally and transversely both on top and bottom. Note that the
reinforcement for slab is connected to the suspended slab in every direction.
 The depth of slab is maintained by using a member known as bar chair or locally
known as “kebeleto”. This helps to keep the effective depth of the slab constant.

During the week ends the activities continue and concrete work for slab
were performed. I will discuss about the work steps for casting of concrete
for beam and slabs.

13
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

 In the case of concrete work in the site done for slab is C-30 grade of
cement.
 For the second floor slab needs around 1000 m3 cement of concrete.
 Concrete we can cast monolithically by using of ready mix it is a
better than other types of concrete casting method like by using of
mixer on the site .
 Casting on the site or mixing on the site take a long period of time b/c
of labor cost, availability of material, like cement, sand, aggeregate .
 In the case of casting we cast only 1/3 of the bar that means up to
negative bars ends (joint casting method).and we must stop on the 1/3
vertically. To prevent the concrete from diagonal shear. Diagonal
shear mainly found on the joint because of that we must cast our
concrete specially slab by using of joint method.
 Before casting of slab electrical and sanitary installation works are
done..

 During the week ends the activities continue and beam reinforcing and
form work for slab were performed.

14
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

I will discuss about the work steps for arrangement for beams bars discussed
below..
 First step is cutting of bars according to the structural design.
 Placing of the main bars 1ST on the top and then place the stirrups
according to the design in the specified space.
 Finally place the main bottom bars and the negative bars.

3rd Month
Week Activity

15
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Nine *slab and beam form work for 3rd floor

*shear wall form work for 2nd floor
*casting of shear wall
*form work and rein forcemeat for lift shaft
*erecting of scaffolding for 3rd floor slab
*casting of column for 2nd floor
Ten *stair case form work
*removing of 2nd floor slab form work after 28 days

My activity during this month’s is mainly just like last month (2nd month).because of
its length of the project all things are done slowly. The building in this month still in
second floor column erection. Otherwise other than column works lift shafts and shear
walls are also casted and rebar.

Formwork, reinforcement and concrete of 2nd floor column

Understanding the work procedures followed while casting of 2 nd floor column was
one of my targets while I was staying on site. 2nd floor column is a column that is located
above the 2nd floor slab. It may have different size and shape. But generally the work
procedures followed in the construction of columns are discussed below.
 Reinforcement or rebar is prepared according to the structural detail drawing.
That is rebar is prepared according to the length specified and stirrups of specified
type are produced. And placed on the proper position that is obtained from
alignment.
 Once a slab is casted, a portion of the column’s reinforcement from the ground
column below will be displayed above the slab. And the stirrup in this section is
closely spaced than that of the stirrups above the splice zone. It is upon this
reinforcement that the prepared reinforcement will be attached.
 Form work preparation starts by the construction of “kracheri ” at the bottom of
the column. Kracheri is used to adjust the formwork by making use of a
referenced center.
 The form work is held in position maintaining its vertical nature through the use
of plumb bob (tumbi). The plumb bob may be a fabricated one or a rope with a
brick tied on it.
 The panels will be painted with mold oil. But due to its expensiveness most of the
time a mix of burned oil and kerosene will be used so that the formwork will be
easily removed.
 A spacer is used to maintain the cover to reinforcement in all sides of the column.
And the form work is strengthened and the panels are held together by the use of
“kerebat” those kerebats are placed by spacing of maximum 60cm .

16
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

 Casting of the column is done by using a ladder like structure locally known as
“estanga” whose main purpose is to support and hold the formwork vertical after
it is checked by the plumb bob.
 Next moving the formwork by using the estanga until the plumb bob shows
squadra will follow. When the tumbi shows squadra, the Estanga will be fixed
upon a large horizontal member known as “gindila”.

4th month

17
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

In this month only on the site we are doing form work for 3rd floor
slab for one month. Because of the disagreement between the contractor
consultant and the owners.
The cause of the conflict between those bodies is the contractor only has 1
month to finish his contract but he is now on 3rd floor slab but the building is
around 8 storys.

Final Monthly intern ship report

18
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

MONERA ENGINEERNG is one of the known construction

company in ETHIOPIA. By the time I reached the site there were form work
for 2nd floor slab. The building is B+G+ 8 HOTEL around 22. the building
consist of 2 stair case ,4 shear walls,2 human and 1 material elevators that
extend up to the top.
MY ACHIEVEMENT DURING THESE MONTHS
 I introduce myself to company staffs. They give support and best
of guide when the problem is faced.
 Improve my interpersonal communication.
 I have been able to understand and read detail plan and work
drawing of the structure.
 Understand about solid slab floor construction.
 Process and method of construction of building.
 Develop my theoretical and practical knowledge.
 How the electrical and sanitary installation have been done
 Improve my teamwork skill.
 I realized that precaution must be the first act in any time of
construction.
 Provide daily work by takeoff .the quantity of concrete, formwork
and reinforcement bars used in each day is calculated.
 I enable to see surveying application and positioning system (in
case of leveling of slab scaffoldings and columns).
 Learn lying of reinforcement and requirement’s based on their
diameter.
 Understand about scaffolding and form work (erection and
removing of form work)
 Concrete mixing conveying compacting and curing.
 Due to high mixing volume the mixing applied by
machine. the specialized mixing machine used is mobile
truck mixer. it gives better and uniform mixes when
capacity of mix increases the time of mixing also
increased. Mixing design by volume due to difference
source of constituents of concrete.
 The method of transporting concrete from the mixer done
by conveyer crane.

19
AMBO UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTEMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

 Vibrator is used to compact concrete to expect the entrap

air from the concrete and achieve maximum density
which leads to higher strength.
 Curing prevents formation of crack due to quick loss of
water and demands for concrete strength .curing can be
done once or twice a day.
 6 days for column and 23 days for slab.

Monolithically connection between structural elements.
