Experiment #19

Date: May 27,2020

Topic: Alkanes and Alkenes

Task/Problem By using only three droppers, six test tubes, aqueous bromine, potassium permanganate
and potassium. Plan and design an experiment to identify which of the two solutions is
saturated and which is unsaturated.

Hypothesis: Alkenes is unsaturated and alkanes is saturated.

Aim: To determine the reaction which can be used to use to distinguish between alkanes and alkenes

Apparatus

6 test tube

3 droppers

Aqueous bromine

Potassium permanganate

Potassium

Method

1. Measure 10 cm3 of cyclohexene and place into two test tube. Label the test tubes A and C.
2. Measure 10 cm3 of cyclohexane and place into two test tube. Label the test tubes B and D.
3. Place a few drops of acidified potassium manganate solution in test tube A and D.
4. Observe any colour changes which occur.
5. Add a few drops of bromine solution into test tube B and C
6. Observe any colour changes which occur

Variables:

Controlled Variable: Volume of the cyclohexane and cyclohexene

Manipulated Variable: acidified potassium manganate solution and bromine solution

Responding Variable: Colour Changes

Expected result: It is expected that alkenes is unsaturated and alkanes is saturated.

Treatment of Results: If alkenes is unsaturated and alkanes is saturated then the hypothesis is correct
and if not, then the hypothesis is incorrect.

Limitation/Source of error Ensure that volume is correctly measure.
