3. Flexible cutting head

Our ZCC 2087 Zehntner-Cross-cut tester is equipped with a specially

designed flexible cutting head which ensures reproducible cross cuts. The
flexible cutting head avoids uneven pressure by the operator. The cutting
head provides a constant, parallel guide of the cutting edges to the
substrate. Therefore our instrument is also suitable for untrained users.

flexible cutting head ensures

reproducible cross cuts.

4. Choice of the appropriate spacing of cuts acc. to DIN EN ISO 2409

Film thickness Substrate Spacing of cuts

in µm in mm
0 to 60 hard 1
0 to 60 soft 2
above 60 to 120 hard and soft 2
above 120 to 250 hard and soft 3

Film thickness Film thickness Spacing of cuts

in µm in mils in mm
0 to 50 0 to 2.0 1
50 to 125 2.0 to 5 2

6. Multi-blade cutting tool

Our multi-blade cutting tools are equipped sixfold with the corresponding
blades. If one side is worn out, the multi-blade cutting tool can be turned to
an unused side. Mark the worn out side by use of a water proof marker e.g.
with a black point.

Operate ZCC 2087 instruction manual version 1.2

Unscrew the clamping bolt by use of the allan key and take out the
clamping screw and the multi-blade cutting tool. Turn the multi-blade
cutting tool one blade to the next unused blade. In this position insert the
multi-blade cutting tool as well as the clamping screw and move the multi-
blade cutting tool to the guide pin. Afterwards tighten the clamping screw
by use of the allan key.

If all three blades of the multi-blade cutting tool are used, it can also be
used from the reverse side. For this the multi-blade cutting tool has to be to
be turned around before inserting it.

If all six blades are worn out, a new multi-blade cutting tool has to be
bought at Zehntner or an authorized Zehntner-dealer or the multi-blade
cutting tool has to be sharpened at Zehntner.

Our model ZCC 2087.4 Zehntner-Cross-cut tester includes 3 multi-blade

cutting tools (each 6 blades with 1, 2 and 3 mm spacing of blades). The
exchange of the multi-blade cutting tools is similary.

7. Handling ZCC 2087.1 to ZCC 2087.4 according to DIN EN ISO 2409

• Hold the cross-cut-tester by its handle so that the cutting head can
move freely
• Cut using one hand
• Never use your other hand or finger of the leading hand to add
pressure to the cutting head
• Always pull the cross-cut tester, do not push.
• Pull the tool over the surface, scratching the coating to the bottom.
Make a second cut crosswise (90° angle).
• Brush the film lightly with a brush along the diagonals to the grid.
Additional adhesive tape test only for hard substrates:
• Remove two complete laps of tape and discard.
• Remove an additional length at a steady rate and cut a piece about
75 mm long. Stick the piece adhesive tape on the cut area. Rub the
tape firmly by finger.
• Within 5 minutes remove carefully and steady within approx. 0,5 to 1 s
in an angle of 60° in the pulling direction.
• Keep the tape for comparisons, eg. by sticking it on a transparent film.

version 1.2 ZCC 2087 instruction manual Operate

• Examine the grid area and evaluate the appearance of the coat in
accordance with the cross-cut scale.
• Test in three locations at least.
• Issue a test report
− The test report shall contain the used adhesive tape as well as
any changes in the test procedure of EN ISO 2409.

For the ZCC 2084, you may choose the suitable multi-blade cutting tool
according to the film thickness and substrate.

8. Handling ZCC 2087.5 and ZCC 2087.6 according to ASTM 3359

• Use a soft brush or tissue to remove any detached flakes or ribbons of
coating.
• Brush the film lightly with a soft brush or tissue.
• Remove two complete laps of tape and discard.
• Remove an additional length at a steady rate and cut a piece about
75 mm long. Stick the piece adhesive tape on the cut area. Rub the
tape firmly with the eraser on the end of a pencil.
• Within 90 ± 30 s remove carefully by seizing the free end and pulling it
rapidly back upon itself at as close to an angle of 180° as possible.
• Examine the grid area using a magnifier and evaluate the appearance
of the coat in accordance with the cross-cut scale.
• Repeat the test in two other locations on each test panel.
