Chevron Corporation – A World-Class Company

Chevron Corporation is an American multi-national energy corporation. One of the successor

companies of Standard Oil, it is headquartered in San Ramon, California, and active in more than 180
countries. Chevron is engaged in every aspect of the oil, natural gas, and geothermal energy
industries, including hydrocarbon exploration and production, refining, marketing and transport,
chemicals manufacturing and sales, and power generation.

We have concluded that Chevron is a world-class company for various reasons, the first being
that Chevron is not resistant to paradigm changes in the industry. It is able to keep up with the trends
and latest technology, as seen in 2017 when they partnered with Microsoft in a 7-year contract and
established them as their primary cloud provider, to accelerate the application of advanced
technologies including analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) to increase productivity. Joe Geagea,
Chevron’s executive vice president for Technologies, Projects, and Services said, “We embrace every
opportunity that streamlines our workflows, gives us insights into more efficient operations and helps
us compete…” This shows their strategic agility and their openness to the necessary changes that will
improve their company.

The company is also committed to protect people and the environment, which includes
developing energy safely and reliably. As a corporation, it is an advocate for increased coverage of
mental health services and workplace policies and practices that foster a “total worker health” culture.
Chevron strives to develop a culture in which everyone believes that all incidents are preventable and
that zero incidents is achievable. Their priorities every day are to get their employees and contractors
home safe and to protect the environment. Chevron is committed to protecting the safety and health of
its more than 61,000 employees and more than 200,000 full-time-equivalent contractor workforces. In
2018, Chevron was awarded the 2018 Mental Health Corporate Excellence Award by the Mental
Health America. This means that Chevron promotes the mental health of its employees, stakeholders,
and community. The president and CEO of MHA explained that this award was meant to highlight
those companies setting the bar, and that “It is incredibly important for corporations to do right by
their employees – and Chevron is doing just that.”.

Chevron also has programs for new mothers and families, such as rooms where new mothers
can nurse and a college-counseling program that guides employees and their families through the
college application process. One of the employees said the Chevron demand that the employees take
breaks every 45 minutes. They even installed a program on the computers that locks it so that
employees must take a 5-minute break.

In 2000, Chevron started to use Lean Six Sigma in its upstream division. Lean Six Sigma is a
method that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing
waste and reducing variation. It combines lean manufacturing and Six Sigma to eliminate the eight
kinds of waste. In 2010, the company won the award for Lean Six Sigma Implementation in Oil &
Gas Operations from Boston Strategies International (BSI) for its efforts, which built on the
experience it has gathered since implementing its first Lean Six Sigma project. The multi-national
corporation stresses employee wellbeing, with on-site health and fitness centers at most of its major
locations, as well as a variety of health-oriented programs and services such as personal training,
massage therapy, and group exercise classes. If an office lacks health and fitness centers, the company
still offers discounts at health clubs. Chevron also has a “Healthy Heart” program that incentivizes
employees to keep track of their activity levels and nutrition with monetary rewards.

Overall, we have seen that Chevron is competitive in all the important aspects a business has
to cover. It gets in with the latest technologies and invests in partnerships that will help further its
advancement. It also cares for its employees more than what is required of a company, and the
executive officers seem to share the same sentiment regarding the treatment of all the employees.
Their regard for employees and treatment of them is held high and other organizations have
recognized it and consider them as one of the benchmarks to treating employees like appreciating
assets. They are also consistent in meeting the demands of consumers and strive to give them the
utmost satisfaction, too. They have Caltex and Texaco as subsidiaries to provide high-quality fuel and
Chevron for technological enhancement and maintenance of a car. Chevron developed their own
‘manual’ called “the Chevron Way” which highlights their commitment to making sure that customers
are satisfied. Lastly, they have begun to use the Lean Six Sigma training, which includes concepts
from lean manufacturing which provides more efficiency in the way the company conducts its
operations.

These have caused us to believe that truly, Chevron is a world-class company and that their
employees and customers are blessed to be affiliated with them.
