PoE Types & Modes

The Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) has defined
two sets of specifications. IEEE 802.3af was first issued in 2005 while
the 802.3at standard was issued in 2009. One of the additions in the
802.3at standard is higher power levels.

There are two modes. Mode B delivers the positive voltage on pins
4 & 5 and the negative on pins 7 & 8. In a 10/100 interface these are
unused pairs. In a 1000 (Gigabit) interface, the voltage is carried over
the same pins as in a 10/100 interface, however they share these
conductors with the data transmission in a 1000 (Gigabit) interface,
which uses all four pairs for data transmission.

In Mode A, on either a 10/100 or 1000 (Gigabit) interface, the positive

voltage is carried over pins 1 & 2 and the negative voltage on pins 3 &
6, which are also utilized by the data transmission.
