PRACTICAL
BOOKLET
2020-2021

NAME: __________ CLASS _______ TEACHER __________

Students in SCIE are expected to be able to think independently about solving problems in a
practical context. This means that you as students should develop your own ideas about how
to approach a task, before perhaps discussing them with other candidates and joining together
as a group to put an agreed plan into effect.

1.Demonstrating investigative approaches could include:

• choosing the materials, or amounts of materials, to use

• choosing which variables to measure and which to control

• deciding what measurements or observations to make and when to make them

• choosing apparatus and devising a procedure that is safe and appropriate.

2.Safely and correctly use a range of practical equipment and materials

You will be be shown how to use practical equipment when it is first met, through a demonstration by
the teacher or technician.

Good quality videos of many techniques are available online which could be used to complement such a
demonstration, these will be placed on Moodle/One note by your course teacher.

You will also be expected to carry out a risk assessment for each laboratory session, you are encouraged
to do this before each laboratory session.

For this you will be expected to:

1. Look at each lab beforehand and demonstrate evidence that you have researched the
laboratory practical in question.

2. How you will safely dispose of materials at the end of the laboratory session.

3. Identify hazards and understand how to minimize risk.

4. Follow written instructions

In many of the activities you will be asked to follow written instructions and will be provided the
aim of the experiment as to be clear on what we expect you to learn from the activity. You would
be expected to read through all instructions however basic they may appear before a laboratory
session is held.
Laboratory safety rules

1. You must not enter a laboratory unless instructed to do so by a teacher.

2. You must not do anything with equipment or materials unless told to do so by a

teacher. You must follow instructions precisely.

3. You must wear eye protection when told to do so and keep it on until told to take it off

when all practical work, including clearing away, is finished.

4. When instructed to use a Bunsen burner, make sure that hair, scarves, ties etc are

tied back or tucked in to keep them well away from the flame.

5. When working with liquids, normally stand up; then you can move out of the way

quickly if there is a spill.

6. Never taste anything or put anything in your mouth when in the laboratory unless your

teacher tells you to do so. This includes sweets, fingers and pencils which might have picked up dangerous chemicals from the
bench.

7. If small amounts of chemicals or microbiological cultures get on your hands or any

other part of the body wash them off. Wash your hands after work with chemicals or

with animal or vegetable matter.

8. Put waste solids in the correct bin, never in the sink.

9. Report any accident to the teacher. This includes burns or cuts and chemicals in the

mouth, the eyes or on the skin.

10.Keep your bench clean and tidy, with bags put in a place where people will not trip

over them. Wipe up small splashes with a damp cloth and report bigger ones to the

teacher.
Experiment 1: Making up a volumetric solution and carrying out a simple acid-base titration

Apparatus and Skills Development

 Use a volumetric flask, burette and pipette as they are intended to be used

 measurement of volume of a liquid

 Use an accurate technique for making up a standard solution

 use acid-base indicators in titrations of weak/strong acids with weak/strong

alkalis and identify color changes as they progress

 make and record qualitative observations

During a titration, it is expected that you will record both initial and final burette readings
from which a titre is calculated by difference.

It is usual practice to record titration results in a table of the type shown below.
Aim of experiment
Experiment 2 : Carry out simple test-tube reactions to identify cat ions and anions

Apparatus and Skills Development

 Qualitative analysis of ions

 Use of laboratory apparatus for qualitative tests for ions

Useful terms to understand

1. Precipitation
2. Miscible
3. Immiscible
4. Effervescence
5. Amphoteric
