The philosophy of healthcare is the study of the ethics, processes, and
people which constitute the maintenance of health for human beings. (Although veterinary concerns are worthy to note, the body of thought regarding their methodologies and practices is not addressed in this article.) For the most part, however, the philosophy of healthcare is best approached as an indelible component of human social structures. That is, the societal institution of healthcare can be seen as a necessary phenomenon of human civilization whereby an individual continually seeks to improve, mend, and alter the overall nature and quality of his or her life. Health Education: The Nutrition Education Program at McKinley Health enter provides in-house and outreach services for students on the Urbana campus. Many of the nutrition services provided on campus are joint programs with the Sports Nutrition Program at SportWell Center. The goal of the nutrition program is to provide education on a variety of nutrition topics, to encourage healthy eating behaviors and to facilitate understanding the benefits of healthy eating. If you are looking for a program you don't see here, please call and we can discuss your needs. For a nutrition program presented by McKinley or SportWell nutritionists, call 333- 2714 for McKinley or 244-0261 for SportWell Center. Individual Nutrition Counseling Illinois students meet one-on-one with a registered dietitian who is a professional staff member at McKinley or SportWell. Nutrition concerns of any kind may be addressed in a half-hour session. Some topics may include: general healthy eating, vegetarian eating, preventing heart disease, diabetes, sports nutrition, disordered eating behavior, herbs and supplements. Living Lean Group Classes Tuesdays from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Living Lean is a series of interactive group sessions where participants can learn about nutrition and fitness through hands-on activities, check their weight weekly, and ask nutrition and fitness questions in a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere. (no appointment required, UIUC students only) Nutrition Walk-in Services Wednesdays from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. at SportWell Thursdays from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at McKinley / Health Education Unit Get your sports nutrition or general nutrition questions answered in these brief consultations. No appointment is required, but space is limited to the first six participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Walk-in sessions are not held during summer sessions. Class Presentations One of McKinley's registered dietitians or nutrition graduate students can speak to your academic class on the nutrition topic of your choice. Peer Education Programs Nutrition workshops are presented in a Jeopardy game format, encouraging questions and discussion. Emceed by upper-level dietetic students, the programs are interactive, fun and educational. You can choose from a variety of nutrition topics - healthy eating, sports nutrition, weight management, herbs, preventive medicine, to name a few.
