UNDERSTANDING ATTACKS ON TOURISTS IN EGYPT

The highlight of Egyptian tourism was in 1992, with more than 3.2 million arrivals,
but one of the most known terrorist attacks was in September 1992. As a result,
arrivals fell by 22% in 1993, and the income received showed a decrease of 42% in
1994. A strong promotional offensive and an internal adjustment to security
measures were necessary to recover acceptable levels of tourists. [ CITATION Azi95 \l

Just as Egypt began to recover visitors after a decade languishing in travel guides,
the terrorism hasn’t stop taking over the tourist area. The reasons why terrorist
groups choose tourist objectives are multiple. On the one hand, they ensure that
their cruel actions generate a great international impact. And also, because they
weaken the credibility of the states where such attacks take place, undermining
confidence in their security abroad and ultimately destabilizing them in a political
and economic way.[ CITATION Ros18 \l 2058 ]

Motivated by the global economic crisis, many countries have started looking for
new formulas and business opportunities to mitigate their consequences in the
best possible way. One of the safest formulas is through tourism, considered one
of the engines of the global economy. But Egypt has so much to do to control the
violence to their tourists, because as we know, is one of the easiest ways to
receive incomes, and with a good government strategy to protect civilians, the
numbers will rise.

What they really need, is an airport security modernization plan and create a
financing fund to renew the tourism industry for the following years. The minister
has goals to reach at least 15 million tourists in 2020. But for now, the reality is to
invest in new equipment at airports that ensures a new technological approach to
security, also including a training program for security personnel and the
installation of video cameras on the streets and roadways. This definitely may help
to reduce and be alarm to any kind of insecurity. Making their tourist feel safe
again, and rising the economy in Egypt as well.
