Notes: Solve Quadratic Equations by the Quadratic Formula

−b ± √b 2−4 ac
The Quadratic Formula: x=
2a
gives the solutions of any quadratic equation
in standard form…..ax2 + bx + c = 0

EXAMPLE: Solve: 5x2  3 = 4x.

Solution 5x2  3 = 4x Write original equation.

5x2  4x  3 = 0 Write in standard form.

“The solutions”: Solutions to a quadratic equation are the zeros of the function.

Why are there two?

Linear functions have ONE x-intercept.

Quadratic functions typically have TWO x-intercepts.

Can you draw a quadratic graph that does not have 2 solutions?

How can you tell if the parabola should open up, or down?________________________________________

Tell whether the equation has TWO solutions, ONE solution, or NO solution.

1. x2 + x + 1 = 0 2. 2x2 – 5x – 6 = 0 3. -2x2 + 8x – 4 = 0

4. 3m2 – 6m + 7 = 0 5. 9y2 – 9y + 1 = 0 6. -3x2 + 8 = 0

7. 25p2 – 16p = 0 8. 2h2 + 3 = 4h 9. 10 = x2 – 5x

Describe and correct the error in finding the number of solutions of the equation.
Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation. If you are not shown a term, its coefficient = 0.
Round your solutions to the nearest hundredth. Sketch a graph if provided.

1. x2 + 7x  80 = 0 2. 3x2  x  16 = 0 3. 8x2  2x  30 = 0

7. x2 + 8x + 7 = 0 8. x2  6x + 1 = 0 9. 9x2 + 10x = 5
10. x2 = 14x  49 11. x2 + 6x = 14 12. 5x2 + x = 1

13. 10x2  4 = 6x2 + 5 14. x2  18 = x2 + 12x 15. x2 = 64
