GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: READ CAREFULLY AND SOLVE THE PROBLEMS GIVEN. SHOW A COMPLETE AND ORGANIZED SOLUTION ON THE
SPACE PROVIDED.

1. An RC beam of 14in wide and 20in deep is to carry a Cont.…

superimposed uniform dead load of 300lb/ft and a
uniform live load of 900lb/ft over the 18ft simple span.
It is to be reinforced with 4#9 tension bars with center
located 3in from the outermost tension fiber. Use
f’c=3,500psi, fy=60,000psi, concrete unit weight of
150lb/ft3, and a modular ratio of 9. Determine the
following:
a. What is the cracking moment of the section? (k-ft)
b. What is the transformed moment of inertia of the
section? (in4)
c. Using the transformed moment of inertia, what is
the maximum allowable service load (including
beam weight) that the beam can carry if the
allowable stresses for the concrete and tension
steel are 1350psi and 20000psi respectively? (k/ft)
d. What is the nominal moment capacity of the
beam? (k-ft)
e. What is the design moment capacity of the beam?
(k-ft)

2. An RC beam of 350mm wide and 500mm deep is Cont.…

reinforced with 8-25mm diameter tension bars in two
layers (4 bars on both layers) and 4-20mm diameter
compression bars. Consider a clear spacing between
layer of bars of 25mm. It must support a uniform dead
load (excluding beam weight) of 7.5kN/m and a
concentrated live load of 17.5kN at the free end of its
cantilever span of 3.5m. Use f’c=34.47MPa, fy=350MPa,
12mm diameter stirrups, clear cover of 40mm,
modular ratio of 9, and concrete unit weight of
23.5kN/m3. Determine the following:
a. What is the cracking moment of the section? (kN-
m)
b. What is the transformed moment of inertia of the
section? (mm4)
c. Using the transformed moment of inertia, what is
the maximum allowable service moment
(including beam weight) that the beam can carry
if the allowable stresses for the concrete,
compression steel, and tension steel are 13MPa,
160MPa, and 210MPa? (kN-m)
d. Neglecting the compression bars, what is the
design moment capacity of the section? (kN-m)
e. Neglecting the compression bars, what is the
maximum additional uniform live load that the
beam can carry? (kN/m)
